Background / History

Nawaki is Tsunade's younger brother and the grandson of Senju Hashirama. While nearing Academy graduation, he asks Tsunade to help him become Orochimaru's disciple. His ambition is to become as strong as Hashirama, protect Konoha and its people, and eventually become Hokage 4 11 57.

At the Land of Rain front-line camp, Orochimaru initially keeps Nawaki away from battle to gain experience. His duties include guarding the morgue, which Orochimaru considers preparation for working with corpses and research. Nawaki later fights alongside Chiyue and Minato, though battlefield experience makes him miss the relative safety of camp work 57 61 76.

Nawaki begins questioning Konoha's treatment of its clans after reflecting on the Senju Clan's battlefield losses and the decision to abandon its surname. He later struggles with news that Orochimaru, whom he regards as family, is cooperating with Danzo 76 311.

During a later battlefield assignment, Nawaki spots Explosive Tags beneath a corpse his companion is handling and is seriously injured while trying to save them. Tsunade stabilizes him, and he recovers in Konoha. He subsequently passes the Jonin Exam; when Tsunade and Nawaki reclaim the Senju surname, his name becomes Senju Nawaki 207 208 236 554.

Personality

Nawaki is outspoken, competitive, and eager to prove himself, particularly against Minato. Losing their contests can leave him discouraged, but he usually recovers quickly. Though he can appear careless, he is capable of thinking seriously about clan politics and battlefield conditions 76 117 301 302.

He is protective of others: his attempt to save a companion costs him a severe injury, and he defends Jiraiya afterward rather than letting him take the blame. He also wants more independence from Tsunade's supervision, even while relying on and caring about her 208 237 610.

Close-Quarters Combat

• Nawaki trains in taijutsu and swordsmanship, although his fighting style initially relies more heavily on ninjutsu 117 133.
• After further training, he is described as proficient in both disciplines; illusion techniques remain a relative weakness 248.
