The sticky pipe walls.
The cold air.
And the stench of rust, silt, and some unknown fermented substance permeating the place made Hawk shut off his sense of smell the moment he entered.
He was not afraid of heat or cold, only of foul smells.
Heat and cold could be endured, but stench was intolerable—especially this kind that seeped into every crevice.
Hawk looked curiously at Spider-Man, who was leading the way ahead.
"How did you find this place?"
"I followed the Lizard here."
Walking ahead, Peter's voice was somewhat muffled behind his spider mask, perhaps because even he found the stench overpowering. "It's right ahead. Just around the corner."
When he had fought the Lizard at school the day before yesterday, Peter had noticed several lizards crawling out from the sewer pipes.
So when he woke up yesterday, Saturday, and remembered that, Peter figured he had nothing better to do and headed straight into the sewers to search.
After looking all day, he had actually found Dr. Connors's temporary base in the underground pipe maze this morning.
And so.
The moment he found it, he thought of Hawk. Thinking Hawk might be interested too, Peter had simply gone to find him and invited him on a weekend underground maze adventure beneath New York City.
Very soon.
After following Peter around the corner ahead, Hawk saw a platform not far away.
Wires of unknown origin had been haphazardly strung across the platform. Some unidentified liquid had glued them to the walls, connecting them to several lightbulbs that illuminated two carelessly placed laptops and some laboratory equipment.
After stepping onto the platform, Hawk swept his gaze around.
"Where's that video you mentioned?"
