Background / History
Hela is Odin's eldest daughter and Thor's older sister. Once a conqueror for Asgard, she grew stronger as Asgard expanded; believing Odin intended to strip her power as her strength rose, she rebelled against him. Odin subsequently imprisoned her for thousands of years. 90 110 218
A spatial rift created by the residual aftermath of Su Yi's battle with the Ancient One cracked Odin's seal and freed Hela in Norway. Recognizing the residual Phoenix Force, she concluded that its wielder could help her defeat Odin, reclaim Asgard, and conquer the Nine Realms. 90 91
Odin responded by sending the true Destroyer Armor to Midgard to capture her. Hela's already weakened divine power continued to drain during its pursuit, eventually forcing her into a younger form and leaving her vulnerable. 91 127 131
After Su Yi defeated and claimed the Destroyer Armor, Hela accepted his protection. In return, he concealed her condition from Odin, while her body remained fixed in a childlike form. 132 133
Hela later learned that Asgard had been destroyed in Ragnarok. After witnessing Su Yi's playback of the disaster, she accepted that Ragnarok—and, indirectly, her own earlier actions—had led to Asgard's fall. She resolved to remain with Su Yi, rebuild her strength from zero, and eventually kill Surtur. 173 174
Appearance
Hela initially appears as a tall, mature woman with a curvaceous figure, dark green disheveled hair, heavy smoky eye makeup, a leather outfit, and high heels. After entering human society, she replaces her old-fashioned appearance with lighter makeup, red lipstick, wavy hair, leather pants, boots, and a cropped jacket. 90 102 104 106
Following the loss of much of her divine power, Hela becomes a smaller, youthful version of herself.
- Her childlike form is approximately 1.5 meters tall. 133
- Her hair changes from dark green to a brighter light green. 133
- Her intelligence remains intact, though her emotional maturity and behavior become more childish. 133 134
- She later wears modern dresses and Lolita-style clothing despite initially resisting them. 172 173
Personality
Hela is intensely ambitious, ruthless, and battle-oriented. Her original objective after escaping was to overthrow Odin, take Asgard's throne, and pursue conquest without regard for personal cost. She respects overwhelming strength and interpreted Su Yi's merciless defeat of her as proof that he was worthy of admiration. 90 104 107
Despite her aggressive instincts, Hela can show restraint when it benefits her goals. At the Avengers base, she put away her weapons after realizing the group were connected to Su Yi, offered assurances that she would not kill indiscriminately on Earth, and volunteered to assist the Avengers. 109 111
Her reduced form makes her more openly playful, stubborn, and emotionally dependent on Su Yi's protection. She enjoys violent games, dislikes being treated as cute, and remains proud of being the Goddess of Death. 133 136 150 178
Hela remains deeply attached to Asgard despite initially focusing on a game teammate after her divine power vanished. Seeing Asgard's ruins firsthand devastates her, and she commits herself to avenging its destruction. 172 173 174
Abilities & Skills
Divine Power
Hela's divine power is tied to Asgard. As long as Asgard existed, it could gradually replenish her power; its destruction reduced her effective level to zero and left her needing to rebuild her strength. 172
- In her weakened state, she was described as a weak Sub-Father Level combatant. 135
- Her power diminished further while fighting the true Destroyer Armor. 127 131
- Depletion causes intense sleepiness and contributed to her physical regression. 128 172
- Her former strength grew alongside the expansion of Asgard's territory and could potentially surpass Odin's. 218
Swords of the Night Sky
Hela can manifest black swords known as the Swords of the Night Sky for ranged and direct attacks. 103
- She summoned five swords above Su Yi during their fight on a New York beach. 103
- She used the swords against the Destroyer Armor, though they only briefly slowed it. 131
- She used them while invisible to attack an armored vehicle carrying currency and gold reserves. 104
Power of Death and Night
Hela can use the Power of Death and Night to summon her cloak and conceal herself. 104
- The cloak can restore her condition almost instantly from nonfatal injuries. 104
- She used it to fly into a human city. 104
- She can use it to hide her body from view. 104
Combat Ability
Hela is an experienced warrior and former conqueror whose instincts remain centered on battle and killing. 90 136
- She attacked Su Yi to test whether he was strong enough to help her reclaim Asgard. 102
- She initially prepared to fight the Avengers after arriving at their base, then disengaged voluntarily. 109
- She states that she has killed many mages and readily joins battles against hostile magic users. 159
- Her diminished power was insufficient to defeat the true Destroyer Armor. 131
Sensing Malicious Intent
As the Goddess of Death, Hela can sense hostile intent directed toward herself and others. 218
