Background / History
Gwen first meets Su Yi at a New York medical gala. At the time, she is a high school student, a laboratory assistant, and the drummer for the band Mary Jane's; the two exchange contact information before she leaves with her group 4 5.
Soon afterward, Gwen is bitten by a radioactive spider and develops enhanced physical abilities. Uncertain whether she should seek medical attention, hide her condition, or use her powers to help others, she visits Su Yi for counseling. She initially describes her own predicament as that of a “friend” who suddenly gained abilities 9 10.
She begins acting as Spider-Woman while concealing her identity from both the public and Su Yi. During the mutated-rat incident, she assists Wanda in securing the sewers, then secretly observes her father, Police Commissioner George Stacy, from afar 20 23 25. Afterward, she rejects the name “Spider-Woman” and chooses Ghost Spider as her preferred superhero identity 25.
Gwen later reveals herself to Su Yi as Spider-Gwen after stopping Lizard Doctor's gene-emitter operation. Her discovery that Su Yi commands Skyfire reassures her that he understands her preference for being an independent, non-professional hero 54 58 59.
Appearance
Gwen is a 1.7-meter-tall young woman with smooth golden hair and a youthful appearance 3 61.
- Her original Spider-suit uses black below the waist, white above it, pink mask patterns, and a white hood with pink lining 21.
- Her first suit is made from resilient fabric used for international athletes' uniforms 21.
- Her Symbiote Suit can reproduce her hooded Spider-suit silhouette while changing its colors and details; Gwen favors a black-and-pink Ghost Spider design 151.
- The Symbiote Suit can retract into an ordinary T-shirt when not in use 154.
Personality
Gwen is lively, intelligent, curious, and notably energetic. She is also a strong student with exceptional memory and broad academic interests, including medicine, history, art, and music 9 74 266.
Despite acting decisively in emergencies, Gwen values freedom over formal superhero service. She wants to stop crimes and help people, but rejects the restrictions and bureaucracy associated with being an Avengers-style professional superhero 44 73.
The Tiger Talisman reveals another side of her personality: an introverted, shy counterpart who shares Gwen's memories and feelings but is far less comfortable expressing herself 72 80. Gwen can also be playful, teasing, competitive, and possessive, particularly around Su Yi 71 72 115.
