Background and History

The eldest of the Three Purities, the Grand Pure Saint resides at Shouyang Mountain and refines pills. He secretly taught some humans to cultivate, but opposed making their race dependent on the Saints’ help; he believed they needed to establish their own path 5 12.

His younger brother Tongtian repeatedly sought his resources for Jie Sect. Tongtian took his Taiji Daoist Robe, while the Grand Pure Saint supplied alchemy methods and later gave Lingbao Tianzun 100 Nine Revolution Golden Pills for Jie Sect’s disciples 5 6 25. He also discovered that he had been named Jie Sect’s Grand Elder, a position that bound him with a substantial karmic thread 10.

Suspecting someone was behind Tongtian’s new methods, he and Yuanshi Tianzun traced their brother’s activities to Li Er. They approached Li Er as Pan Laoda and Pan Laoer, concealing their identities as Saints 23 37 41. When a dispute arose over the Daoist sect’s lineage, Li Er proposed a separate Dao Family with the Grand Pure Saint as its leader; he accepted and named Li Er its young master 45.

After Black Dog damaged the sun and moon’s sources, Li Er devised a way to establish the rotation of time. The Grand Pure Saint joined his two brothers in carrying it out, using the Taiji Diagram to gather the disordered laws and help restore the celestial bodies 54. Later, the three entered a world of inverted laws, where their accustomed powers proved difficult to use. A failed attempt to fly ahead taught the Grand Pure Saint to proceed cautiously 114 116.

Personality

The Grand Pure Saint is usually composed and guarded. He sees through many of Tongtian’s attempts to obtain pills and worries that his brother’s actions will bring him into conflict with the Heavenly Dao, yet continues to help him and reacts quickly when he believes Tongtian is injured 5 19 124. He is protective of both younger brothers, though he tries not to favor either one 19.

His reserve does not make him indifferent. While searching the dark side of Mount Buzhou, he feels lonely as his brothers become occupied with their families, and reflects on their earlier travels together 135.
