Background / History

After becoming a Sage, Tongtian opened Jie Sect to public recruitment at Biyou Palace on Golden Turtle Island and lectured prospective disciples on the Dao of Interception. During the event, he noticed that the mortal Li Er could not be read through normal means and was connected to a Heavenly Dao anomaly. Tongtian concealed the disturbance before heavenly lightning could strike Li Er. 1 3

Recognizing Li Er as a possible hope for Jie Sect, Tongtian secretly chose to protect and instruct him. He approached Li Er under the identity of the ragged sword cultivator Pan Laosan, rescued him from man-eating monsters, built him a protected cave dwelling, and sought suitable human cultivation methods and protective treasures from his elder brothers. 3 5 6

Li Er's ideas reshaped Tongtian's early administration of Jie Sect. Tongtian implemented the Trial of Heart, the Heaven's Pride Ranking, sect facilities, and a hierarchy-based disciple system; the Trial and Ranking became Acquired Merit Treasures that suppressed Jie Sect's fortune. He later accepted Li Er's proposal to establish a secret branch to preserve the sect's teachings against future threats. 7 11

Tongtian expanded his sect through aggressive recruitment and resource gathering. He recruited Zhao Gongming, obtained materials from Yuanshi Tianzun, stole the Treasure Distribution Cliff from Zixiao Palace, and secured the Phoenix's Nirvana Fire in exchange for accepting Kong Xuan as a disciple. 17 18 25 30

Personality

Tongtian is impulsive, competitive, and highly opportunistic. He routinely frames theft as “finding opportunities,” takes resources from his brothers and Zixiao Palace, and readily provokes stronger opponents when Jie Sect's interests are involved. 11 17 18 29

Despite this recklessness, he is deeply protective of those he considers his own. He conceals Li Er's existence, searches for resources tailored to Li Er's cultivation, safeguards disciples from outside claimants, and refuses to surrender Golden Crow Sixth after the latter joins his faction. 3 5 28 43

Tongtian is unusually willing to learn. He humbly adopted Li Er's unfamiliar ideas about sect management and disciple selection, sought Yuanshi Tianzun's help where his own formation knowledge was insufficient, and treated Li Er's cultivation insights as valuable instruction. 7 8 14

He also remains conspicuously relaxed in danger. While fleeing an immense tide of strange creatures, he had the Black Dog pull a cart so that he could rest, alarming his companions with his lack of urgency. 165
