Background / History

Li Er accidentally refined Treasure Distribution Cliff into a living black dog. When Sect Master Tongtian first encountered him, Black Dog immediately pounced on him; Tongtian recognized the familiar aura of Treasure Distribution Cliff despite being unable to perceive how the dog crossed the distance. 19

When Tongtian removed Black Dog's concealment, the dog underwent a transformation tribulation. His body concealed its aura even from the Heavenly Dao, and he repeatedly swallowed the lightning tribulation in a Law Manifestation of Heaven and Earth before Tongtian forcibly removed him from the scene. 20 Zhunti subsequently traced a karmic connection to him, prompting Black Dog to borrow the Qingping Sword and sever the initial Karma Thread. 20 21

Li Er reinforced Black Dog with divine patterns, but Zhunti's pursuit resumed. Black Dog evaded the Karma Thread, joined Tongtian in chasing Zhunti, bit off part of the Sage's foot, and later pursued him by tearing through space. The bites left Zhunti poisoned and afflicted with involuntary barking. 22 23

Black Dog developed into the Daoist Sect's scout and finder of fortunate individuals. He can smell luck and treasures, impersonated Zhunti, penetrated barriers with ease, and was responsible for stealing the sixth Golden Crow from the Demon Court. 24 28 31

After recklessly swallowing conflicting Taiyang and Taiyin sources, Black Dog nearly split apart. Li Er operated on him, extracted the volatile essences, implanted Ancestral Witch Blood Essences, and gave him a Taiji Divine Mark; the procedure substantially increased his intelligence and awareness. 54 56 A later Taiyang-origin surgery revealed that a tempting voice had nearly driven him into depravity. 72

Black Dog infiltrated the Taiyin Star to obtain its Innate Yin Essence. He captured a lingering Pangu obsession inside a high-imitation Pangu body within his sea of consciousness, but was badly injured while escaping a Sage's attack. Li Er recovered the Yin Essence from his body and later forced him to surrender the concealed Pangu clone. 92 93

As Daoist Sect influence expanded, Black Dog used compromising recordings to pressure prominent figures and negotiated for six-tenths of the sect's Calamity profits. He later entered the Demon Court, declared himself the “Black Emperor,” and sought cultivation methods from its demon kings in exchange for sharing his own. 121 122 128 129

After entering the dark side of the Primordial World through the Bronze Passage, Black Dog battled strange creatures around Mount Buzhou and helped deliver Li Er's Six Paths of Reincarnation technique to Tongtian. He remained determined to escape the dark side, even when Tongtian attempted to use him as a decoy against his elder brothers. 135 137 151 153

Appearance

Black Dog normally appears as a pitch-black canine artifact spirit. His form is highly mutable, and the many formations, divine patterns, and laws engraved into his body can be activated or exposed during combat. 19 153

Black Dog is mischievous, opportunistic, and fond of using his masters' status as protection. He eagerly pursues targets, treasures, and people with great fortune, often treating risky thefts or kidnappings as exciting outings. 22 24 28

He is intensely loyal to Li Er and Tongtian, although that loyalty is expressed through reckless plans, hostile bargaining, and frequent demands that others be bitten, captured, or enslaved. He is particularly distrustful of the Three Purities, fearing they may someday betray Li Er. 73 137

His arrogance is tempered by clear fears: Li Er's experiments, Tongtian's binding rope, and the prospect of being punished with thousand-year-old ginger quickly make him back down. 28 40 137 He is also a compulsive gossip, using his exceptional nose to expose Li Er and Tongtian's relationships. 40 109 129
