Background

Ma Hongjun entered Shrek Academy with the top-tier Beast Soul Evil Fire Phoenix. His Martial Soul was inherently flawed: its excessive yin and evil fire left him lacking pure yang fire and destabilized his foundation. Before the flaw was addressed, Flander had to take him to brothels to vent the evil fire’s effects. 146 490

He was introduced while arguing with Cuihua, whom the newcomers mistakenly believed he was harassing. Cuihua confirmed that Ma Hongjun was her boyfriend, but left after Dai Mubai explained the situation behind Ma Hongjun’s condition. Embarrassed by the incident, Ma Hongjun fled to eat. 23

His evil fire was later purged after he consumed an Immortal Herb, though his innate deficiency remained. Zhao Xuan and Master identified the fire-and-spiritual Flame Lord Soul Bone as a means to reinforce his unstable foundation, and Zhao Xuan ultimately chose to give it to Ma Hongjun rather than keep it or reserve it for Hermione. 146 490

The Fire God later offered Ma Hongjun the Nine Trials of the Fire God, giving him a chance to fully mend his deficiencies. Ma Hongjun accepted, endured the Sun God Bird’s golden flames, evolved his Martial Soul, and inherited the Fire God’s divine position. 489 521 522

Despite his lewd and reckless habits, he is loyal to his companions. When beaten by Bu Le, he immediately seeks help from Tang San and Zhao Xuan, and the group treats the attack as an insult against Shrek itself. 71

His Fire God trials significantly mature him. After returning, he is more composed, confident, and sincere, though Tang San and Zhao Xuan can still recognize traces of the “sleazy fatty” he once was. 522
