Background

Tsunade was deeply affected by Tobirama Senju’s death as a child. When her parents prepared to leave on a mission, she ran away crying; her mother explained that Tobirama’s death had struck her especially hard. Her outwardly hot-tempered, carefree behavior is presented as a protective front over a more vulnerable nature. 2

She is Mito Uzumaki’s granddaughter and a descendant of both the Senju and Uzumaki clans. Mito considered Tsunade a leader of the Senju generation, placing high expectations on her education and attempting to teach her sealing techniques despite Tsunade’s reluctance. 12 24

After Mito adopted Hoshiryu Uchiha, Tsunade welcomed him into the Senju estate, gave him a tour, and became his neighbor. Their early friendship was marked by games, arguments, gambling losses, and Hoshiryu repeatedly pushing her to train. 24 28 38
