Background
Jiang Tianzheng served as a fighter pilot during the early Kaiju invasion. During one battle, he reportedly charged a Kaiju in a suicide attack to cover his teammates, leaving him with internal and external scars. He later transitioned into command, but remained directly involved in the war against the Kaiju. 112
When he assumed command of the Hong Kong Shatterdome, the base possessed only three aging Jaegers. Within several years, he developed it into a major Jaeger station comparable to newly built bases. 112
He has devoted his life to defeating the Kaiju, sacrificing a conventional family life; he has no wife or children and regards the Shatterdome personnel as his children. 141
Appearance
Jiang Tianzheng is a white-haired military officer whose stern gaze and authoritative bearing are repeatedly noted by those around him. 65 110
- Often wears a green officer’s uniform. 27
- Also wears a black woolen Jaeger Corps uniform during the counterattack campaign. 212
- Keeps multiple identical white shirts and green officer uniforms in his office-bedroom. 27
- His hair had turned prematurely gray by the time Hong Kong Shatterdome became a major base. 112
Personality
Jiang Tianzheng is disciplined, exacting, and intensely duty-driven. He maintains a strict separation between personal matters and military procedure, expects formal reporting from pilots, and enforces discipline even during emergencies. 27 32
He is also deeply protective of civilians and personnel. At the first Kaiju alarm, he orders the evacuation of Hong Kong residents, clearance of the docks, and sealing of bridges, insisting that no civilian be left behind. 32 During later battles, he repeatedly emphasizes that every pilot is precious and urges his strongest personnel to return alive. 90
His strategic outlook is proactive rather than defensive. He supports the Savior Plan, gathers additional Jaegers and pilots under Hong Kong’s command, reinforces other Chinese regions when necessary, and argues before the World Council that humanity must attack the wormhole rather than wait for extinction. 24 64 115 112
Despite his composure, prolonged command and old injuries take a visible toll. He suffers from deteriorating health, carries blood pressure medication, and continues working for more than thirty hours without rest during the counteroffensive preparations. 112 125
Leadership & Command
Shatterdome Discipline
Jiang Tianzheng acts quickly against internal disorder. He breaks up a fight between Seti Andrews and Mike Kane, sentences Seti to three days of solitary confinement, and summons Mike to discuss more serious matters. 27
He also holds Rosen accountable for the destruction caused during the Kunlun incident, warning Newton that military discipline cannot allow criminals to avoid consequences merely because they may be useful. 23
Civilian Protection
During the Hong Kong Kaiju alert, Jiang Tianzheng orders a full evacuation despite the threat initially being thousands of kilometers away. 32
- Orders residents moved into shelters. 32
- Orders docks cleared and bridges sealed. 32
- Prioritizes preventing civilian casualties during the Hong Kong swarm attack. 95
Jaeger Deployment
Jiang Tianzheng coordinates Shatterdome Jaeger operations, assigning formations, reserve forces, and artillery support according to the evolving Kaiju threat. 35 90
- Deploys Huangshan, Dongting, and FL against Dragon and Viper, while assigning Anshan to intercept the airborne Eagle and Changbai to support the formation. 35
- Orders Tang Jia to eject from the sinking FL rather than die attempting to avenge his brother. 41
- Responds to Gecko’s surprise attack by deploying Tianshan, Luoyang, and Helan. 40
- Commits all twelve available Jaegers to Hong Kong’s defense against the Kaiju swarm, separating direct-combat and long-range-support groups. 90
- Orders shore Jaegers into a full assault on the insect swarm and warns Kunlun of Rose’s threat. 95
- Directs Anshan and Luoyang during Pterodactylus’s attempted self-destruction. 108
Strategic Planning
Jiang Tianzheng intends to destroy the wormhole through the Savior Plan, believing humanity must consolidate every available resource for a final counteroffensive. 24 64
He arranges for Shanghai, Huashan, and Singapore’s Midnight Ghostfire to reinforce Hong Kong Shatterdome, reflecting his trust in Hermann Gottlieb’s wormhole theory. 32
During the expedition campaign, he chooses to advance eastward despite the risks and receives support from Fang Tianwen and the Liaoning battle group. 140
