Background / History

Oz was born into a family that had served the kingdom as craftsmen for generations. He resented this inherited fate and dreamed from childhood of becoming a mage capable of commanding supernatural forces. Although he concluded that he would never possess real magic, he refused to abandon the dream and instead learned stage magic. 4

His creativity and technical skill made him an acclaimed circus magician. He toured several kingdoms, using chemical reactions, lighting, props, and performance techniques to create novel illusions for enthusiastic audiences. 4

Oz’s careless joke that his brother could skim gold from a royal commission helped inspire the Old Craftsman’s adulteration of the kingdom’s golden plates. Following his brother’s suicide, Oz feared arrest and execution for being implicated in the crime. In desperation, he prayed to the Wish-Granting Magician to escape safely. 4 20

Rhine fulfilled the wish by arranging for Oz’s circus balloon to break free and carry him from the kingdom. After drifting for a day and night, Oz landed in the Green Fields, where locals mistook his arrival from the sky for proof that he was a powerful magician. He accepted the misunderstanding for food and shelter, then claimed to be Rhine’s prized disciple. 21 22

Over the following eleven years, Oz became King of the Land of Oz and established Emerald City. To sustain the illusion of a magical emerald metropolis, he required residents to wear green glasses.
