Background

Ariel is the Sea King’s youngest daughter and the Sixth Princess of the Sea Kingdom. Among the merfolk, she is renowned for possessing the most beautiful singing voice in the sea. Though she is beloved by her family, she is fascinated by the human world and wishes to explore the lands beyond the ocean. 40 42

After being permitted to visit the surface at age fifteen, Ariel witnessed a shipwreck and rescued Prince Eric from the stormy sea, bringing him safely to shore. She fell in love with him but was forced to leave before he awoke, while another human woman was present when he regained consciousness. 42 57

Unable to live on land with Eric, Ariel sought the Sea Hag for a potion that would give her human legs. She was prepared to surrender her voice and endure the potion’s costs, including the world’s Curse: if she failed to gain an Immortal Soul, she would dissolve into sea foam. Rhine instead created a superior potion free of the Sea Hag’s painful side effects and voice-forfeit. 47 48 49
