The Humans on the Other Side of the Door

In addition to technology related to interstellar travel and colonization, there were many mechanical exoskeletons and large vehicles, as well as one item that Sui Yang was personally concerned with: biotechnology.

The so-called "Avatar" was actually a "miner" unit developed by the Resources Development Administration, or RDA—the largest non-governmental human organization in the film—to facilitate the mining of rare minerals on Pandora.

Pandora contained room-temperature superconducting ore; the "floating mountains" witnessed by the protagonist were due to this special ore, so while it was worth a fortune, it could also allow the human technology tree to continue to flourish and climb.

However, apart from the animals living on Pandora and the intelligent humanoid species known as the "Na'vi," if humans chose to operate directly on the surface of Pandora without wearing breathing masks, they would faint in over 20 seconds and die within 4 minutes.

To create a team of miners that could work on the ground without relying on breathing masks and could survive solely on local Pandoran food, the Avatar Program was born.

Humans in the film had already proven that human twins, or human-animal hybrids sharing common DNA, could actually establish a sensory and conscious connection.

The RDA used human genes from project participants who donated their own blood and tissue samples, cross-breeding them with Na'vi genes to successfully cultivate the "new species" known as Avatars.

Although the RDA also used cloning technology, and Avatars would exhibit dream-like behavior while in amniotic tanks, in reality, each Avatar was merely a shell without a soul or personality, inheriting only the appearance and physique of the human who provided the genes.

By utilizing technology to establish a sensory link, they successfully enabled the human consciousness to transfer into the Avatar's brain and complete the process of controlling it.

However, each Avatar could only be piloted by the specific human who provided the genes, though if the pilot's genetic similarity to the Avatar was extremely high, they could still "unlock" and pilot it.

The protagonist's twin brother in the film was the original pilot; it was only because of his brother's accidental death that the protagonist was temporarily recruited by the RDA.

But the cost of over $5 billion per Avatar led the RDA to decisively abandon the original intention of using them as miners, turning them instead into a bridge for communication between humans and the Na'vi, attempting to peacefully persuade the Na'vi to relocate so that humans could mine the room-temperature superconducting ore located beneath their dwelling.
