Background / History

Fall of the Flying Pirates

Shiki commanded the Flying Pirates, a top-tier crew once regarded alongside the Roger and Whitebeard Pirates. More than twenty years before his encounter with Garen, Shiki was defeated, his original crew scattered or killed, and the Flying Pirates collapsed. He later rebuilt the crew around the scientist Indigo and withdrew to a floating island, where they developed biotechnology while preparing for a return to power. 188

His floating-island operation kept villagers enslaved and used mutated beasts under his subordinates’ control. Shiki intended to use his biological research in a plan to destroy the East Blue. 190 193

Battle Above the Sea of Clouds

Shiki encountered Garen after noticing his airship near the floating island. Believing that Garen and Admiral Kuzan had discovered his plans, he attacked them in the sky. His Float-Float Fruit made him far more maneuverable than opponents relying on Geppo, and he used his bladed prosthetic legs to launch relentless aerial sword attacks. 189 190 191

Garen and Kuzan gradually neutralized Shiki’s aerial advantage: Kuzan froze him with Ice Age, while Garen burned him with Demacian Justice and later struck him with Excalibur. Shiki escaped the initial encirclement, fell onto Nine Serpent Island, and attempted to recruit Boa Hancock against Garen by threatening her homeland with a floating island. 191 194 195

Shiki returned to the floating island despite his injuries. Garen’s repeated Taunting Shout prevented him from escaping, and his stamina eventually failed. Refusing capture or a quiet death in weakness, Shiki chose to die spectacularly by throwing himself onto Garen’s blade. 196 199

Death and Ghost Servitude

After dying, Shiki became a translucent ghost with his strength and Float-Float Fruit ability intact. He initially believed he had entered an afterlife, but Garen immediately asserted control over his soul and forced him to retrieve his own corpse. 200

Garen used Shiki’s corpse to claim his bounty, appropriated his treasure for railway construction, and redirected Indigo’s biological research toward peaceful purposes. Shiki was also compelled to perform public acts under Garen’s orders, including freeing slaves at Sabaody and executing Saint Aceho while posing as an independent resurrected pirate. 200 213 214

New World Operations

While under Garen’s control, Shiki lured the injured Marshall D. Teach into trusting him before attempting to assassinate him on a floating island. Teach escaped by punching through the island and diving into the sea of clouds. 215 216

Shiki later appeared to ally with Kaido and the World Government against Garen. In reality, he followed Garen’s instructions to sow discord among Shiryu’s Impel Down escapees, recruiting Avalo Pizarro, Catarina, Vasco Shot, and others with promises of a greater stage. 405 407 408

During the conflict with Kaido’s fleet, Shiki first rescued several key ships from a hurricane, then separated the fleet and ambushed Shiryu’s faction. After the war, he was publicly identified as a revolutionary ally of Garen and ranked third among the Hero Association’s S-class heroes. 427 440

Jiangshi Incident

The World Government repurposed Shiki’s corpse through Vegapunk’s technology into a special Pacifista model. Phantom gave the mechanical body a powerful shadow, creating the Jiangshi Golden Lion as his trump card. 418

Shiki was enraged by the desecration of his body and attacked Phantom with overwhelming force, though Garen ultimately intervened to defeat Phantom and recover the Jiangshi. 419

In life, Shiki was a tall, imposing man with dazzling golden hair, a weathered face, and a powerful pirate’s presence. After his aerial battle with Garen and Kuzan, his body was left heavily scarred and burned. 189 194 196

Shiki is arrogant, theatrical, and intensely proud of his status as a previous-era sea overlord. He looks down on younger figures such as Kuzan and Hancock, treating their titles and reputations as insignificant beside his own legacy. 190 195

He is ruthless toward the weak and follows a law-of-the-jungle worldview, treating weaker people as consumable resources. His enslavement of villagers and willingness to threaten Nine Serpent Island with a floating landmass reflect this cruelty. 191 193 195

Despite this, Shiki possesses a fierce personal code of dignity. Once defeated, he preferred an honorable, spectacular death to capture or an undignified decline. 199

As Garen’s controlled ghost, he remains bitterly resentful of his reduced status. He is nevertheless capable of projecting great charisma, intimidating criminals with Conqueror’s Haki and attracting ambitious followers. Many of his later manipulative speeches, however, are delivered under Garen’s direction. 200 407 408
