Background
Garen was originally an Earth player of League of Legends. After selecting his main character, he was transported to Samwell Island in the East Blue and awoke in a nearly two-meter-tall, muscular body with no armor, weapon, food, or local knowledge. 1
After realizing he had entered the world of One Piece, Garen adopted the identity of a Demacian noble: commander of the Dauntless Vanguard, friend of Prince Jarvan, and bearer of the title “Might of Demacia.” The persona was an improvisation, but it became the foundation of his public image. 6
His first fight against the Steel Cutlass Pirates changed his outlook. Disgusted by their treatment of civilians and their willingness to murder for profit, he resolved to fight for those unable to fight for themselves. 10 After defeating the crew, he accepted their bounty while publicly framing the reward as a tool for encouraging righteous action. 15 16
Appearance
In his normal form, Garen is a burly, well-proportioned man nearly two meters tall. He has short black hair, sword-like eyebrows, a handsome but rugged face, and a physique compared to an iron tower. 1
- Wears ornate, heavy gold-and-white armor that is frequently mistaken for the attire of a noble or Celestial Dragon. 6 96
- Carries an oversized, door-plank-like greatsword with a golden hilt and a large sapphire set into its blade. 11 356
- His armor is capable of becoming blood-soaked without impairing his fighting ability. 12 15
- Can enlarge to roughly twenty meters through Death Descent. 236
- Can assume larger or specialized forms, including a golden giant, a winged form, and a thirty-meter Shadow Knight. 245 356 417
Personality
Garen presents himself as a righteous knight and consistently acts against pirates, slavers, traffickers, corrupt officials, and other oppressors. He is especially angered by the exploitation of civilians, as shown by his campaigns against the Arlong Pirates, Krieg Pirates, Goa Kingdom nobility, and Doflamingo. 10 66 95 356
His justice is not indiscriminate. Garen kills active enemies in battle and executes people he judges to be severely evil, but he refuses to slaughter surrendered prisoners merely to gain experience. 76 77 He also distinguishes violent pirates from harmless adventurers, regarding Luffy as a “navigator” rather than a pirate. 91
Despite his heroic image, Garen is pragmatic, greedy for bounty money and experience, and willing to manipulate appearances for strategic advantage. He fabricated the Knight Fruit, impersonated a Celestial Dragon, used Golden Lion’s attacks as a staged deception against Kaido, and infiltrated an enemy war council under disguise. 16 33 96 405 424
Abilities & Skills
Data-Driven Body
Garen’s body functions according to a System-like health and experience framework rather than ordinary biology.
- Gains physical strength as his level rises. 60 101
- Does not fatigue while exerting himself and can maintain full combat output over extended battles. 12 22 405
- Can breathe and speak underwater despite his armor and the Fish-men’s attempts to drown him. 53
- Converts many otherwise lethal attacks into health loss, allowing him to outlast stronger opponents through endurance. 12 171
- Sea Stone restraints can weaken him, but fail to fully neutralize his System-based abilities. 235 236
Greatsword Mastery
Garen’s greatsword is his primary weapon and the focus of most of his abilities.
- Its recall function allows Garen to summon it back with the command “Sword, come!” 11
- The recalled sword can exert tremendous force, dragging nearby people and even Vice Admiral Garp when it returns. 34
- Garen can throw the sword with enough force to pierce defenses, then recall it for a second strike from behind. 69 232
- His attacks possess a guaranteed-hit property when a target is within sword range, allowing him to intercept cannonballs and strike evasive opponents. 26
- His swordsmanship was recognized by Tashigi as profound and mysterious, leading Wallace to dub him the “Ippon Ken Dou Swordsman.” 33
Fatal Strike
A speed-and-power enhancement used for decisive single-target attacks.
- Grants a 30% speed increase and empowers Garen’s next sword strike. 12
- Temporarily suppresses Devil Fruit powers, as demonstrated against Buggy’s Chop-Chop Fruit. 24
- Can also suppress Observation Haki after a successful hit. 33
Judgment and Justice Rage
Judgment turns Garen into a high-speed spinning vortex of greatsword strikes, while Justice Rage adds golden-red holy flames.
- Judgment maintains its speed and force even while cutting through multiple enemies. 12
- At higher strength, the spinning sword generates a tangible whirlwind that expands Garen’s attack range. 73
- Garen can guide the lingering tornado after Judgment ends, including directing poison gas into enemy formations. 73 75
- Justice Rage can merge with Judgment to create a flame tornado capable of devastating large groups. 105
- In giant form, the enlarged flames become a battlefield-scale area attack. 236
Demacian Justice
Garen’s execution technique calls down a golden sword of light upon a target.
- Deals greater damage to people with more severe evil deeds. 60
- Admiral Krieg’s evil produced a 150% damage amplification. 75
- Garen later used the same principle to screen Krieg Pirate officers, executing those whose evil levels were especially high. 77
- The technique severely injured Gecko Moria and was later used against Blackbeard and Kaido. 147 171 403
Laurent’s Eye of the Mind
A defensive sword skill obtained at level 7.
- Negates all damage and crowd-control effects for 0.75 seconds. 77
- Releases a powerful sword-energy wave after the parry. 77
- Has blocked attacks from Laboon, Mihawk, Blackbeard, and Phantom. 107 112 171 417
- The invincibility window is brief, making timing critical against sustained assaults. 171
Mobility and Martial Arts
Garen learned and adapted techniques from multiple fighting styles.
- Shave — Enables bursts of extreme ground speed; Garp taught him its fundamentals. 91 92
- Geppo — Allows aerial movement and rapid vertical escape once Garen’s body became strong enough. 128 171
- Fish-Man Karate — Uses air and water pressure to block or redirect attacks, including Kaido’s flames and lightning. 403
- Hasshoken — Produces penetrating shockwaves that damage targets internally. 403
- Hero’s Spear — A Giant secret technique that overdraws life force for an overwhelming punch; Garen can use it without ordinary exhaustion. 403 405
Transformations
Garen can change his size and form through System skills and borrowed abilities.
- Death Descent enlarges him to twenty meters, increasing his reach, movement scale, weapon size, and area coverage without directly increasing damage. 236
- Great Demise gives him a winged, golden form exceeding four meters in height. 356
- A borrowed Shadow-Shadow Fruit ability lets him become a thirty-meter Shadow Knight clad in Haki-infused shadow armor. 417
- Shadow Armor can form shields, restraining tendrils, and ground-piercing spikes across a wide area. 417
- He has also used a golden giant form resembling Sengoku’s power to defeat San Juan Wolf. 245
Klepto Hand
Klepto Hand allows Garen to collect invisible “spell shards” dropped near Devil Fruit users and temporarily use their powers.
- Borrowed powers last 180 seconds. 241
- Garen can only see the spell shards himself; Garp mistook his collection behavior for a mental-health problem. 241
- Has borrowed the Chop-Chop Fruit, Dalmatian Fruit, Diamond-Diamond Fruit, Hana Hana Fruit, Sand-Sand Fruit, Love-Love Fruit, Tremor-Tremor Fruit, and Gravity-Gravity Fruit. 241 242 254 372 392
- Can use borrowed abilities with strength far beyond that of their original owners, such as creating enormous Hana Hana Fruit arms. 254
- Cannot effectively use a Devil Fruit he personally eats while in Data Mode; his combat-compatible fruit powers come through Klepto Hand instead. 206
Support Skills
At high levels, Garen’s System abilities expanded beyond personal combat.
- Demacian Standard grants a 10% attack-speed bonus to Garen and allies within 3,000 meters. 301
- Steadfast Bastion lets him share non-targeted skills with an ally. 482
- He used Steadfast Bastion to reinforce Golden Lion against one of the Five Elders, decisively shifting their battle. 482
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Greatsword — Garen’s recallable primary weapon; its damage and range grow with his forms. 11 236
- Heavy armor — Ornate gold-and-white armor that supports his knightly image and remains functional in extreme combat conditions. 6 12
- Demacian Standard — A summoned banner that provides attack-speed support to nearby allies. 301
- Shadow-Shadow Fruit candies — Used while disguised as Phantom to reproduce Shadow-Shadow Fruit powers. 428
- Visual Den Den Mushi — Used to record evidence and publicize corruption or criminal activity. 121
Relationships
- Nami — Initially a thief who targeted Garen’s wealth and sword; became his navigator, close companion, and public “First Lady.” Their relationship is marked by teasing, trust, and Nami’s recurring jealousy toward other women. 6 17 104 254 324
- Shirahoshi — Garen rescued and supported Fish-Man Island; Shirahoshi later states that she has married him with her father’s approval. 293 295
- Garp — Mentor and occasional opponent. Garp tested Garen’s limits, taught him the basics of Shave and Geppo, and remained concerned about Garen’s interpretation of justice. 34 91 92
- Wallace — Reporter and early admirer who publicized Garen’s deeds, helping establish the Knight of Justice image. 16 33 66
- Tashigi — Swordsmanship expert and Demacia officer who recognized Garen’s unusual sword art and later maintained order in the East Blue. 33 104
- Nico Robin — Initially approached Garen on behalf of Baroque Works; later shared his interest in Poneglyphs and ancient history. 125 137
- Golden Lion — Secret System-recognized teammate whose attacks cannot harm Garen; he helped deceive Kaido and later received Garen’s shared support skills. 405 482
- Dracule Mihawk — Swordsmanship rival who first tested Garen on the Grand Line, then conceded the title of World’s Greatest Swordsman. 112 392
- Whitebeard — Respected opponent who acknowledged Garen’s strength and passed him the title of World’s Strongest Man. 371 372
- Sabo — Revolutionary ally who agreed to pursue future cooperation between the Revolutionary Army and Garen’s League. 397
- Ace and Teach — Treated Garen as a brother following their shared history and later encounters, though Teach privately retains a desire for revenge. 173 371
Story Role / Major Arcs
East Blue Knight
Garen begins as an isolated transmigrator on Samwell Island, then becomes a pirate hunter after confronting the Steel Cutlass Pirates. His victories over Steel Cutlass, Buggy, Arlong, and Krieg establish him as the East Blue Knight of Justice. 1 15 23 60 75
Following Krieg’s fall, Garen takes control of his territory, builds a local force, and has Demacia Logistics recruit oppressed scavengers from the Goa Kingdom. His organization becomes a major East Blue power whose flag deters pirates more effectively than the Marines’ presence. 79 96 104
Grand Line Expansion
After entering the Grand Line, Garen defeats powerful pirate crews, confronts Mihawk, defeats Crocodile, and reveals that he can read Poneglyphs. 104 112 137 He also becomes a Shichibukai while continuing to pursue pirates and human traffickers according to his own standards of justice. 147 174
New World Power
Garen’s expansion brings him into conflict with Doflamingo, Germa 66, Big Mom, Kaido, and the World Government. He defeats Big Mom, kills Doflamingo for his human-trafficking crimes, and gains recognition as an Emperor-level force. 318 356
After Whitebeard and Mihawk acknowledge his strength, Garen receives the titles of World’s Strongest Man and World’s Greatest Swordsman. 372 392 He then recruits tournament contestants and former pirates into Demacia Company, treating anti-piracy operations as both a moral campaign and a source of System experience. 378 394
League of Heroes
Garen declares that the World Government, rather than the Pirate King alone, created the Great Age of Pirates by enabling injustice from above. He plans to eliminate Kaido, integrate the New World, and cooperate with the Revolutionary Army against the World Government. 397
After Big Mom and Kaido fall and the New World is pacified, Garen leads the League of Heroes into open opposition to the World Government. 442 470 In the new era, he resides in Mary Geoise with his household, including Shirahoshi. 498
