Background / History
The Witch Clan is an ancient race with a profound connection to Pangu and Buzhou Mountain, which was formed from Pangu's spine. Buzhou and its residual Dao rhythm are therefore objects of deep reverence to the clan. The Old Witch Doctor identifies Li Su's faint Bedrock Rune resonance as the unmistakable aura of Buzhou and considers him a possible variable in an ancient prophecy 20.
The clan declined following the ancient Witch-Demon War, but surviving Witch People remain in dangerous regions such as the Shadowed Marsh. Their elders preserve an ancient covenant concerning the “abandoned ones” connected to the Ancient Demon Court’s teleportation array 20.
By the time of the renewed Witch-Demon Great Tribulation, the Witch Clan is dispersed among twelve tribes across the Primordial World. Their settlements face coordinated Demon Race offensives, with Ten Thousand Witch City serving as a major gathering place and battlefield 37 44.
Appearance
Witch People are physically imposing humanoids whose cultivation emphasizes body, bloodline, and law rather than primordial spirits.
- Tall, bronze-skinned figures commonly dressed in simple animal skins or leather armor 20 21.
- Bodies often marked with strange paint or ancient Witch symbols 20.
- Warriors wield bone staffs, stone spears, stone axes, bone daggers, and bronze battle-axes 20 21 38.
- Their aura is described as primitive, savage, and powerful, distinct from the ethereal bearing of Xuanmen cultivators 20.
Culture and Society
Cultivation and Combat
The Witch Clan does not cultivate primordial spirits. Its members temper their physical bodies, Blood Essence, bloodline powers, and laws; their higher realm is called the Great Witch Realm 20.
- Great Witches can manifest Ancestral Witch True Forms and wield powerful witch arts 40.
- Witch warriors fight in coordinated formations, using Blood Essence, totems, and earth-derived power 37 38.
- Their formations draw on earth veins, Bloodline Power, and Ancestral Witch totems, favoring direct and formidable effects over Xuanmen-style refinement 39.
- A Celestial Immortal-level Old Witch Doctor is described as a Great Witch by Witch Clan standards 20.
Faith and Ancestral Legacy
The clan honors Ancestral Witches, particularly Houtu, the Ancestral Witch of Earth. The Houtu Tribe maintains an Ancestral Witch Hall and a Bedrock Altar containing the will, Dao marks, battle intent, and protective faith of Houtu and generations of Great Witches 38 39.
The Witch Clan's earth-oriented ideals include heaviness, bearing, resilience, compassion, and protection. These principles are especially prominent within the Houtu Tribe 39.
Territory and Settlements
- Shadowed Marsh — A hazardous wetland guarded by Witch People. Travelers may cross its center only by the Water Serpent Bone Bridge and must not disturb the slumbering Ancestral Spirits beneath the marsh 20.
- Witch Clan Secret Market — A restricted market of giant beast bones and black boulders, normally open only to clan members and friendly visitors 21.
- Ten Thousand Witch City — A colossal Witch Clan city built from beast bones, stone, and witchcraft. It houses multiple tribes, including the Houtu Tribe, and becomes a major front in the renewed war against the Demon Race 38 40.
- Houtu Tribe encampment — An earth-aligned district of Ten Thousand Witch City, centered around a statue of Houtu and distinguished by a gentle, inclusive, dense earthly aura 38.
Trade
The secret market trades in unusual cultivation materials and ancient remnants.
- Goods include powerful beast bones and teeth, ores, herbs, and incomplete artifacts inscribed in ancient Witch script 21.
- Common exchange mediums include fierce-beast vital essence, souls, and special ores 21.
- The clan values methods that may assist in tempering Blood Essence or improving combat, even if those methods are not orthodox 21.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Shadowed Marsh Encounter
Li Su and Zhiwei enter the Shadowed Marsh and are confronted by hostile Witch People led by the Old Witch Doctor. The elder initially rejects all outsiders and especially distrusts Zhiwei as a Yao, but relents after recognizing Li Su’s connection to the Ancient Spirit’s Sigh and Buzhou resonance 20.
The Old Witch Doctor grants both travelers passage under an ancient covenant and warns them not to stray from the bone bridge or awaken the marsh's Ancestral Spirits 20.
Secret Market
At the Old Witch Doctor’s instruction, the young Witch Person Chi guides Li Su and Zhiwei to the clan’s secret market. Li Su trades a Fiend Blood Spirit Refining Art jade slip for three Meteor Cores containing exceptionally pure Stellar Power 21.
The Witch Clan also warns Li Su of the dangerous Wall of Sighs, nearby fierce-beast tides, and “unwelcome shadows” active toward Kunlun 21.
Ten Thousand Witch City
During the renewed Witch-Demon Great Tribulation, Li Su reaches Ten Thousand Witch City after witnessing Witch Clan warriors battle a Qiongqi. He is received by the Houtu Tribe’s High Priest, who recognizes the Guardian Dao Rhythm on his jade pendant and permits him to reside within the tribe 37 38.
Li Su aids the Houtu Tribe by improving defensive formations and healing barriers. His work earns him the affectionate titles “Stone Bamboo” and “Guardian Bamboo,” while the High Priest permits him to comprehend at the Bedrock Altar 39.
Defense Against the Demon Race
When the Demon Race attacks Ten Thousand Witch City, Li Su and Houtu Tribe priests construct the Houtu Star Bedrock Array using totem pillars, Spirit Stones, earth veins, the Wu Earth Essence, Bedrock Dao rhythm, and stellar power 40.
The array holds back the demon tide after the city’s outer defensive array collapses, enabling Witch Clan warriors to counterattack demon generals and trap demon soldiers in a stellar illusion 41. Reinforcements from Jade Void Palace, including Princess Long Ji and Cihang Daoren, ultimately force the Demon Race to retreat 43.
Aftermath
Ten Thousand Witch City survives but is heavily damaged. The Houtu Tribe suffers comparatively fewer losses due to the protection of Li Su’s array and joins the relief effort 44.
Before Li Su departs, the High Priest gives him a northwestern map and a bone token bearing the Houtu Tribe insignia. The token may be used to seek assistance from Witch Clan tribes encountered on his journey 44.
Relationships
- Li Su / Mo Xing — Initially treated as an unwelcome outsider, then recognized as an honored guest due to his Ancient Spirit’s Sigh inheritance and Buzhou resonance. He later becomes a trusted ally of the Houtu Tribe and aids Ten Thousand Witch City’s defense 20 21 38 44.
- Zhiwei — Initially rejected by the Old Witch Doctor because she is a Yao, but allowed to cross the Shadowed Marsh alongside Li Su after his Buzhou resonance is recognized 20.
- Old Witch Doctor / Grandpa Zhu — Elder of the Shadowed Marsh Witch People. He recognizes Li Su’s unusual inheritance, arranges Chi’s guidance, and warns Li Su of dangers beyond the marsh 20 21.
- Chi — Young Witch Person who escorts Li Su and Zhiwei to the secret market 21.
- Houtu Tribe High Priest — Great Witch who recognizes Li Su’s Guardian Dao Rhythm, provides him sanctuary, permits access to the Bedrock Altar, and grants him a bone token upon departure 38 39 44.
- Demon Race — Principal enemy during the renewed Witch-Demon Great Tribulation; Demon Race forces assault Ten Thousand Witch City and other Witch Clan settlements 37 40 44.
- Jade Void Palace — External ally during the defense of Ten Thousand Witch City. Princess Long Ji, Yang Jian, and Cihang Daoren help repel the Demon Race attack 43.
Trivia

- The Houtu Tribe’s Ancestral Witch Hall is built from an unknown yellow divine stone and stands beside the Bedrock Altar 39.
