To Hagrid, the Ministry of Magic's Investigator was terrifying, because the Investigator had the authority to send him back to Azkaban.

But the Board of Governors' Investigator was troublesome, because Amosta could represent the Board of Governors and expel him from Hogwarts. Though Hagrid knew Headmaster Dumbledore would certainly speak up for him, it would still be an enormous hassle.

Amosta and Hagrid trudged with difficulty through the depths of the Forbidden Forest. Though it was daytime, the dense trees blocked most of the light from the sky, leaving the forest dark and gloomy. Amosta had no choice but to draw his wand and light it for illumination.

The surroundings were utterly silent. Even when they listened closely, they could hear nothing apart from snapping branches and the patter of rain against leaves.

Hagrid seemed thoroughly familiar with this place. He jumped down from a slanted tree trunk, glanced around, then waved at Amosta while panting heavily.

"This way, Professor Breen."

After another ten arduous minutes of travel, they reached an area that had clearly seen no human presence for a long time. The ground was covered by a carpet of rotting leaves several feet thick, and every step felt like sinking into a mud pit.

"I think you're wasting your time, Professor." Because of his enormous weight, Hagrid sank deeper with every step. To keep himself from being completely swallowed by the quicksand-like rotten leaves, he had to grip branches stretched overhead while inching forward. "I've asked him many times, Professor Breen, but he's never been willing to tell me. He only said the monster in the castle was a terrifying ancient creature, the natural enemy of spiders. As for anything else, he wouldn't tell me a thing. If you ask me, he's not likely to tell anyone else
