Background / History
Tom Riddle was born to a witch mother and a Muggle father, Tom Riddle Sr. His father abandoned his mother after learning she possessed magic; his mother died giving birth, and Tom grew up in a Muggle orphanage. He later murdered his father and resented sharing his name. 851
As a Hogwarts student, Riddle was outwardly polite, quiet, refined, handsome, and exceptionally gifted. Dumbledore nevertheless recognized his arrogance and cruelty early on. Riddle was also a descendant of Salazar Slytherin. 92 1243
While at Hogwarts, Riddle opened the Chamber of Secrets and blamed Hagrid for the attacks. He created a diary containing a soul fragment, later identified as one of his earliest Horcruxes. 52 86
Voldemort pursued immortality by repeatedly dividing his soul into Horcruxes. His fixation on survival and the relics of Hogwarts' founders led him to use the diary, Ravenclaw's diadem, Slytherin's locket and ring, Hufflepuff's cup, Nagini, Harry Potter, and eventually the Caduceus as vessels or anchors for his soul. 80 868 1343 1389
Appearance
Voldemort's restored body is gaunt and inhuman, with features repeatedly compared to a snake. Before his full resurrection, he existed in an infant-like, skeletal state and required Barty Crouch Jr.'s care. 730 851
- Pale, nearly skeletal skin 1147
- Scarlet, vertical slit pupils 1147
- Flat, snake-like nose with narrow slits 1147
- Long, pale fingers described as spider-like 851
- Usually wears voluminous black robes 1261
Personality
Voldemort is intensely vain, cruel, and controlling. He treats followers as disposable tools, rewards loyalty only when useful, and responds to perceived deception with torture or murder. His followers obey him through terror rather than trust. 851 986 1126
He is obsessed with defeating death and cannot accept that another wizard—particularly Herpo—might have surpassed him on the path to immortality. The destruction of his Horcruxes provokes both magical and psychological agony. 1150 1345
Despite his grandiosity, Voldemort fears Dumbledore, Amosta Breen, and the power Harry derives from love and connection. He conceals this fear beneath rage, threats, and declarations of supremacy. 1100 1333 1344
Abilities & Skills
Dark Magic Mastery
Voldemort is regarded as one of the most dangerous Dark wizards in history. Dumbledore acknowledges that his mastery of Dark Magic is far beyond ordinary imagination, even if his damaged soul limits his ultimate potential. 812
- Uses the Killing Curse freely against enemies and subordinates. 851 1126
- Punishes followers with the Cruciatus Curse. 1126
- Can transform into or travel as black wind and smoke. 1334
- Commands large-scale dark magic capable of shrouding the sky in clouds and lightning when wielding the Caduceus. 1345
- Performed self-modification experiments using magical-creature bloodlines to enhance his magic. 1149
Horcrux Creation
Voldemort divided his soul across multiple Horcruxes to avoid permanent death. A Horcrux anchors its creator's broken soul to the mortal world after a fatal injury and can restore the creator by consuming another person's life force. 80
- Created at least seven intentional soul vessels, plus Harry Potter as an accidental living Horcrux. 1343 1389
- His repeated soul-splitting stripped away reason and emotion, leaving him increasingly ruled by desire and obsession. 86 1376
- Used founder relics and other significant objects as Horcrux vessels. 868 1389
- Made the Caduceus into an additional Horcrux after accepting its bargain. 1345 1389
Mental Connection with Harry Potter
A fragment of Voldemort's soul within Harry creates a magical connection between them. Voldemort can exploit it to influence Harry's dreams, reveal his own emotions and actions, and temporarily possess Harry's body. 479 1126 1334
- Manipulated Harry's visions to lure him toward the Department of Mysteries. 1108 1324
- Used Harry as a vessel to threaten Dumbledore after fleeing the Ministry. 1334
- His proximity and rage trigger intense pain in Harry's scar. 477 1126
Death Eater Command
Voldemort commands the Death Eaters through fear, personal loyalty, and the Dark Mark. He uses the Mark to reward, summon, and monitor followers. 851 1041
- Restored Barty Crouch Jr.'s Dark Mark after his resurrection. 851
- Directs coordinated attacks, prison breaks, kidnappings, and political violence. 1041 1090 1100
- Keeps followers' missions compartmentalized to discourage betrayal and scrutiny. 1263

Empowered by the Caduceus, Voldemort launches a broader assault on Hogwarts and declares his intention to make all life submit to his rule. 1353 1356
Final Confrontation at Malfoy Manor
Harry confronts Voldemort after the destruction of his Horcruxes and Nagini's death. Voldemort loses the Caduceus when it abandons him for Herpo, leaving him isolated and increasingly panicked. 1389
