Background / History
Mouri Kogoro is a former police detective who operates the Mouri Detective Agency. He lives and works with his daughter, Mouri Ran, while Conan Edogawa temporarily stays with them. His former colleague, Inspector Megure, continues to work with him on major cases. 7 20 43
During the art-museum murder case, Kogoro initially suspects Director Ochiai but doubts that an elderly man could physically carry out the killing. He shifts suspicion toward Kubota, though he ultimately recognizes that a conviction requires evidence rather than demeanor alone. 8 9
On Moon Shadow Island, he accepts an investigation request after learning it carries a 500,000-yen reward. Despite his initial skepticism of curses, he becomes increasingly serious as the case escalates from an eerie piano recording to Kawashima's disappearance, severed hands, and revelations about the Aso family's murder. 16 17 19 20
Personality
Kogoro is proud of his identity as the “Great Detective” and readily introduces himself with confidence, even when his reputation does not impress those around him. 17
He can appear unreliable: he drinks, sleeps at his desk, is easily distracted by attractive women, and sometimes dismisses Conan's deductions because of Conan's apparent age. 7 9 43
Beneath that behavior, Kogoro is practical and protective. He does not believe in supernatural explanations without evidence, notices the smell of blood in Kuroiwa's gift box, checks on unconscious officers, and becomes visibly angry when criminals endanger police personnel or evade responsibility. 16 19 21 23
Abilities & Skills
Investigation
Kogoro has professional experience from his time in law enforcement and remains capable of organizing investigations.
- Identified that the art-museum killer would need unusual physical strength, based on the victim's body and the murder method. 8
- Reconsidered Kubota as a suspect rather than relying solely on his frightened behavior. 8 9
- Recognized the smell of blood from Kuroiwa's gift box and treated the severed hand as evidence of a deliberate crime rather than a curse. 19 20
- Deduced that the Moon Shadow Island culprit was targeting Kuroiwa and Nishimoto after hearing Kawashima's recorded confession. 22
- Proposed using police protection to draw out the perpetrator targeting the two confessing criminals. 23
Police Coordination
Kogoro maintains a working relationship with Inspector Megure and assists the police at crime scenes.
- Works with Megure during the art-museum investigation and the Moon Shadow Island case. 7 20 21
- Checks the condition of two unconscious officers and confirms that they are alive. 21
- Helps assess the infiltration of the community center after he and Megure are incapacitated. 29
Former Police Experience
His background gives him familiarity with criminal evidence and investigative procedure.
- Identifies blood by smell when examining Kuroiwa's gift box. 19
- Insists that conclusive evidence is required before treating Kubota as the murderer. 8
- Rejects supernatural explanations in favor of physical evidence, such as discovering the tape recorder hidden inside the piano. 16 17
