Background / History

Early ambitions and research

Orochimaru’s pursuit of immortality grows from witnessing life’s fragility. The White Snake Sage provides a tangible model of the power, knowledge, and lifespan he desires. His earliest approach is to imitate her through modifications to his body and soul, accompanied by the development of soul-related ninjutsu 154 221.

Nawaki is his first disciple, but dies young. Orochimaru later regards becoming Hokage as a way to fulfill both his childhood ideals and the aspirations of Nawaki and others, rather than as a position he intends to hold indefinitely 152.

He also serves in Root and receives guidance from Danzō. Their past cooperation includes activities that Hiruzen acknowledges would damage Orochimaru’s reputation if exposed. By the succession period, however, those stains have become concentrated on Danzō, while Orochimaru has built support through his research department 197 247.

Taking Kagetsu as a successor

Kagetsu’s insect research draws Orochimaru to the Nara household. Impressed by his intelligence and experimental work, Orochimaru personally requests permission to take him as a close disciple and successor. Hiruzen approves his return to team leadership, and Orochimaru also requests Anko Mitarashi for the team 8 9.

He tests Kagetsu and Anko with a bell-grabbing exercise, then introduces them to the risks of Ryūchi Cave summoning. Shisui subsequently joins the team, despite Orochimaru initially warning Kagetsu about his direct service to Hiruzen’s Anbu 10 24.

After a Root operative attacks Kagetsu, Orochimaru escorts his disciple home and confronts Hiruzen. The resulting negotiations secure approval for the Technology Development Department and place funding cut from Root under Orochimaru’s control 26.

Building the Technology Development Department

The department becomes both Orochimaru’s research base and the foundation of his political influence. The Uchiha invest most heavily, followed by the Ino-Shika-Cho clans. The declining Kurama Clan also offers money and clan members’ bodies in exchange for research into its endangered Kekkei Genkai 38.

Orochimaru offers the Uchiha technical support involving the Mangekyō Sharingan. Over subsequent years, the department’s work helps more Uchiha awaken their eyes and increases the number of Three-Tomoe users, strengthening the clan’s commitment to his Hokage candidacy 29 112 156.

Kagetsu’s soul research and Shinnō’s medical scrolls broaden Orochimaru’s understanding of immortality. He begins investigating Tailed Beasts as sentient Chakra aggregates and possible evidence for enduring spiritual existence, rather than treating survival solely as preservation of flesh 110 111.

War leadership and succession

As commander of the Iwa front, Orochimaru repeatedly holds back Ōnoki’s forces at the Land of Fire’s border. His understanding of Ōnoki’s thinking helps compensate for unfavorable differences in strength. He later coordinates with Tsunade and wounds Ōnoki with the Kusanagi Sword 171 188.

His teacher’s acceptance of restrictions on Uchiha deployment deepens his disappointment in Hiruzen’s increasingly cautious leadership. Nevertheless, Hiruzen ultimately chooses him over Minato because his clan alliances make his position more secure and offer a better chance of addressing Root 124 197.

Orochimaru is announced as the Fourth Hokage candidate, receives broad acceptance from the clans and Jonin, and completes the succession ceremony. He immediately redistributes core authority, replaces senior personnel, and asserts his position against Danzō 198 199.

Governing Konoha

Orochimaru’s administration links village development with research funding and long-term stability. He presents an ambitious restructuring plan to the Jonin Assembly; Hiruzen expresses reservations and Danzō condemns it, while Fugaku explicitly commits the Uchiha to supporting it 216.

Assignment Responsible party

Medicinal herbs and livestock Ino-Shika-Cho clans 216
Animal taming Inuzuka Clan 216
Insect cultivation Aburame Clan 216

He also supports economic cooperation beyond Konoha. Kagetsu’s proposed environmental restoration project becomes the Oasis Project, tying Konoha, the Land of Fire, Sunagakure, and the Wind Country together through investment and shared benefits. Orochimaru sends Koharu and Homura to strengthen the Sunagakure relationship 212 243 245.

A treaty with Amegakure hires its shinobi to guard Konoha’s mineral deposits in River Country. Later negotiations over Gelel resources expand cooperation among the Five Great Ninja Villages. Orochimaru tells Ōnoki that his larger objective requires companions and extends beyond rivalry within the Shinobi World 253 267 269.

Resurrection and emerging threats

Working with Tsunade and Kagetsu, Orochimaru studies complete and incomplete souls and attempts to transplant a summoned dead person’s soul into a cloned body. An early subject briefly awakens before dying when its soul is forcibly removed; the researchers investigate whether the Pure Land’s rules require a sacrifice 243 263 264.

The research later succeeds. Tobirama returns, and Orochimaru and Kagetsu perform the ritual that resurrects Nawaki. Orochimaru explains that souls contaminated by Hollow Power—or altered through a Hōgyoku Awakening Ceremony—cannot return to the Pure Land after death 280 281 285.

His Soul Cursed Seal on Hiruko also becomes an intelligence source, revealing Hiruko’s contact with Uchiha Setsuna in the Land of Water. When Hollows threaten the Wind Country, Orochimaru dispatches Kagetsu’s team and authorizes sharing classified Hollow information with Sunagakure 297 299 301.

Alternate-world counterpart

Visitors encountered beneath Rōran come from a world where Minato, not Orochimaru, became Fourth Hokage. Sakura identifies that world’s Orochimaru as an S-Rank missing-nin responsible for the Konoha Crush Plan, Hiruzen’s death, and abducting a companion as a reincarnation vessel. These are explicitly the counterpart’s actions, not the history of this timeline’s Hokage 204 210.

Appearance

  • Golden, snake-like eyes: His pupils narrow into vertical slits 167 271.
  • Modified body and soul: Earlier attempts to imitate the White Snake Sage leave both distorted despite his outwardly human appearance. He later begins correcting those alterations after finding a better path 138 221.
  • Horns in soul form: During his encounter inside Hiruko’s consciousness, Orochimaru touches horns on his forehead and explains that the soul’s appearance is exposed there 226.
  • Hokage attire: Wears the Hokage robes and douli, removing them to reveal combat clothing before sparring with Jiraiya 219.

Personality

Orochimaru values talent, unusual techniques, and discoveries more than broad accessibility. He accepts risk as an inherent price of exceptional power and sees little reason to make difficult Forbidden Techniques usable by the untalented. His interests eventually expand from collecting Kekkei Genkai to studying inherited bloodlines, archaeology, and the origins of the shinobi world 124 139 153.

His mentorship combines genuine investment with calculated self-interest. He protects Kagetsu, publicly backs his experiments, and arranges specialist instruction when his own teaching is insufficient. At the same time, he considers conditioning gifted children as future reincarnation vessels and initially interprets a request for Sharingan samples as permission to sacrifice Uchiha Jonin 20 26 34 111 152.

Becoming Hokage noticeably softens his public demeanor: he returns villagers’ greetings with smiles, and Nagato finds him unexpectedly gentler. This change does not erase his cruelty toward experimental subjects or his willingness to manipulate souls. Hiruko’s resentment does not deter him from imposing a technique designed to eventually consume everything Hiruko possesses 212 227 253.

As immortality becomes more attainable, his fear-driven urgency eases and research itself takes precedence. He rejects using the Dragon Vein to change the past and increasingly favors peace and cooperation as conditions for pursuing larger discoveries 152 212 219 269 280.

Abilities & Skills

Ninjutsu and Forbidden Technique Research

  • His ninjutsu expertise approaches Hiruzen’s, while his study of Forbidden Techniques may exceed his teacher’s 264.
  • Builds upon Tobirama’s techniques rather than merely reproducing them, adapting their demanding foundations to his own methods 138 152.
  • Studies nearly every Book of Seals technique involving souls, spiritual power, or consciousness 264.
  • Has limits: he possesses Black Coffin’s training method but abandons learning it because he lacks confidence in mastering it 160.

Sealing Techniques and Cursed Seals

  • Possesses substantial sealing expertise and teaches Kagetsu its foundations before arranging advanced instruction through Minato 34.
  • His original Cursed Seal concept combines a strength increase with fragments of his spirit capable of eroding and transforming a bearer’s body and soul 61.
  • The department’s third-generation seals trade some power for greater stability and broader compatibility. Surviving recipients can remain clear-headed temporarily and exit their chosen mode when control deteriorates 288.
  • Compatibility remains a major obstacle, and the seals retain dangerous aftereffects 288.

Living Corpse Reincarnation

  • Treats the body as a replaceable vessel while preserving Orochimaru’s Chakra, consciousness, and soul 137.
  • Offers the possibility of taking a host’s talent, Kekkei Genkai, and remaining lifespan 137.
  • Requires suitable vessels; forcing a powerful soul into an inadequate body burdens both and weakens performance 110.
  • Crude soul division risks damage, making the technique’s initial form an incomplete answer to immortality 137.

Hōgyoku Mode and Sage Power

  • Uses the Hōgyoku to strengthen and adjust his soul; its effects include improved Chakra quality, soul resilience, and Yin Release power 138.
  • Its response to his desire for immortality and mastery of every technique develops his soul-division abilities toward seizure and replication 162 221.
  • Aspires to unite Ryūchi Cave, Mount Myoboku, Shikkotsu Forest, and Hōgyoku Sage Arts in one body. The context does not establish that he completes this goal 138 139.
  • Uses a targeted Sage Art to distract Manda and Ryūchi Cave’s three God Princesses, bypassing their interference 155.

Defensive and Survival Techniques

  • Modified Blut Vene: Used to withstand Jiraiya’s attacks during their spar 220.
  • Snake Shedding: Orochimaru-Style Body Replacement Technique: Emerges through the discarded body’s mouth, escaping injuries as severe as being severed at the waist; requires no hand seals 220.
  • Summoning Technique: Triple Rashomon: Counters Jiraiya’s Sage Art: Hair Needle Senbon 219.

Sage Art: Spirit Recording Shadow Engraving Technique

  • Creates a replica of Jiraiya capable of reproducing his ninjutsu and Sage Arts 220.
  • The replica can also use Orochimaru’s body replacement technique, surviving the destruction of its outer body 221.

Soul Bestowal and Soul Cursed Seals

  • Shares knowledge, experience, and abilities through a soul fragment while creating a route to absorb the recipient’s own abilities and bloodlines 227.
  • Repairs Hiruko’s flawed soul sufficiently to support further development of the Chimera Technique 227.
  • Allows intermittent observation through the bearer’s vision, rather than continuous unrestricted access 297.
  • Hiruko’s sealing techniques alone cannot fully suppress its superior energy, but combined sealing and Setsuna’s Mangekyō power temporarily sever Orochimaru’s connection 297.

Soul Shadow Clones

  • Distributes power according to the amount of soul assigned, determining which body functions as a clone or main body 279.
  • Uses separate bodies for Hokage duties, department research, and personal experiments 279.
  • Requires Hōgyoku Mode and compatible abilities; learning Orochimaru’s version also requires his Cursed Seal 286 288.
  • Warns that careless soul manipulation can cause madness. His own Soul Secret Technique can compensate for soul loss from other sources, an advantage Tobirama lacks 288.

Impure World Reincarnation and Resurrection

  • Summons souls from the Pure Land and uses a complementary Forbidden Technique to transplant them into cloned bodies 263.
  • Improves Tobirama’s original technique and incorporates Hollow Power to bind and contaminate souls 285.
  • Successfully participates in Nawaki’s resurrection after earlier experiments expose the danger of souls being reclaimed from restored bodies 264 285.

Summoning and Intelligence

  • Contracts with Ryūchi Cave’s snakes, including Manda. Powerful intelligent snakes can refuse summons or demand compensation 10 307.
  • Uses a potent neurotoxin and antivenom to subdue Manda during the Ryūchi Cave visit 154.
  • Employs specialized snakes whose bellies connect to storage spaces 111.
  • Receives information through snakes carrying Chakra-based memories 247.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Kusanagi Sword — Wounds Ōnoki during the battle alongside Tsunade 188.
  • Hōgyoku — Kagetsu’s creation and the central focus of Orochimaru’s later soul and Sage Power research 137 138 161.
  • Shinnō’s research scrolls — Medical and immortality research supplied by Kagetsu; stored inside a specialized summoning snake 110 111.
  • Book of Seals techniques — A major source of his Forbidden Technique research, particularly Tobirama’s work and soul-related methods 152 264.

Relationships

  • Nara Kagetsu — Close disciple, intended successor, and research collaborator. Kagetsu’s soul research redirects Orochimaru’s approach to immortality, and Orochimaru trusts his judgment on scientific and political matters 9 111 139 212.
  • Anko Mitarashi — Student personally requested for his team. Her admiration contrasts with her initial naïveté about the darker demands of snake summoning 8 10.
  • Uchiha Shisui — Subordinate and experimental participant whose talent Orochimaru respects. Their association also strengthens his ties with the Uchiha 24 136 137.
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi — Teacher and predecessor. Orochimaru becomes disillusioned with his caution, but Hiruzen ultimately transfers village authority and secrets to him 124 197.
  • Tsunade — Fellow Sannin, battle partner, and resurrection researcher. He offers to revive Dan and Nawaki to secure her return and later works with her to fulfill that promise 156 188 243 285.
  • Jiraiya — Longstanding teammate and friendly rival. Their spar exposes Orochimaru’s interest in Mount Myoboku’s Sage Arts, while Jiraiya supplies information about the Ōtsutsuki 219 220 271.
  • Senju Nawaki — First disciple. His death remains part of Orochimaru’s motivation for seeking the Hokage position; Orochimaru later helps resurrect him 152 285.
  • Shimura Danzō — Former guide and Root associate turned political adversary. Orochimaru redirects Root resources and uses his knowledge of the organization to undermine Danzō’s control 26 28 247.
  • Uchiha Fugaku — Clan leader and key political ally. Their research agreements connect Uchiha ambitions with Orochimaru’s rise and reforms 152 153 198 216.
  • White Snake Sage — Early model for immortality and source of historical knowledge. Orochimaru negotiates Hōgyoku access with her but remains wary of her hostility and power 111 154 155 240.
  • Hiruko — Former companion and later Soul Cursed Seal bearer. Orochimaru values the Chimera Technique but treats Hiruko’s development as something he can eventually harvest 139 227 297.
  • Tobirama Senju — Resurrected predecessor and fellow technique developer. Orochimaru respects his talent and shares Soul Shadow Clone research despite Tobirama’s refusal to accept a Cursed Seal 286 288.
  • Namikaze Minato — Rival Hokage candidate who becomes an advisor rather than an enemy. Orochimaru accepts his appointment without resentment and consults his battlefield experience 198 260.
