Background / History
Roger Pirates Intern
Buggy first appears as a red-nosed child accompanying the Roger Pirates during their resupply stop at Dullamos Island. He becomes part of the crew’s young trainee trio alongside Shanks and Austin, though his early training is marked by deliberate slacking and reluctance to enter dangerous fights 1 3 5 374.
At twelve years old, he fights beside Shanks against pirate elites during the confrontation with Shiki’s fleet. After a storm saves the Roger Pirates, Buggy eagerly asks whether his luck caused it. Austin encourages his dream of becoming a great pirate, and Buggy promises to treat him to the best orange juice once he succeeds 11 12.
Buggy falls ill before the crew reaches Laugh Tale. Shanks stays behind to care for him, leaving both trainees absent from the final island. Austin considers whether Buggy’s Devil Fruit caused the illness, but this remains a personal hypothesis rather than an established explanation 13 21.
Roger’s Execution and the Split with Shanks
After the crew disbands, Buggy and Shanks help see former crewmates home and prepare to attend Roger’s execution. Learning that Roger secured the removal of his crew from the government’s bounty list moves both boys to tears 22 28.
Buggy watches Roger’s execution beside Austin and Shanks. Afterward, Shanks declines to pursue Laugh Tale immediately and invites Buggy onto his own crew. Buggy interprets the decision as a betrayal of Roger’s wishes, rejects the invitation, and declares that they will be enemies. Austin does not intervene, respecting their right to choose separate paths 46 47 48.
East Blue and the Orange Grove
Buggy establishes his own pirate crew in the East Blue, occupying a town while searching for treasure. When Austin visits, Buggy receives apparently old treasure maps that Austin actually drew himself and arranged to have stocked with buried treasure. Their reunion also lets Buggy fulfill his old orange-juice promise with a cart of high-quality oranges 171 172.
Austin explains that Shanks has not abandoned Roger’s will: the One Piece cannot yet be obtained at the proper time. He shows Buggy an Eternal Pointer to Laugh Tale and offers to help him become Pirate King. Buggy trusts Austin but, at twenty years old, feels unqualified to accept such an ambition 173 174.
At Cocoyasi Village, Buggy fights Arlong’s fish-men to secure its oranges. Despite serious injuries, he defeats most of the attackers with a Buggy Ball and knocks out Arlong after the fish-man attacks the grove. He saves Bellemere’s life, then claims her family’s orange grove and orders them to maintain it 275 276.
His protection becomes exploitation. Buggy demands exceptionally refined oranges, threatens Nami’s family if they fail to supply them, and pays to keep shipments ready for Austin’s eventual return. The resulting debt and pressure drive Nami to steal treasure. After Austin returns following nearly ten years away, Buggy increases his demands; Luffy ultimately defeats him while helping Nami 323 324 328 329.
Impel Down and the Summit War
In Loguetown, Buggy attempts to execute Luffy, only for lightning to destroy the platform. Buggy survives the lightning and fire unharmed but is surrounded by Marines. Austin declines to rescue him, believing imprisonment could help him gain followers 334 335.
Buggy later escapes his Impel Down cell using the Chop-Chop Fruit and encounters Luffy. Their disruption develops into a mass jailbreak involving Mr. 3, Mr. 5, Ivankov, and other prisoners. The escape succeeds after Mr. 5, disguised as Austin, opens the Gate of Justice 385 386.
Approaching Marineford, Buggy gains devoted followers when the Marines reveal his history with Roger and Austin. Austin subsequently gives him the Seagull King’s Den Den Mushi and encourages him to broadcast the war for fame. Buggy presents himself as a legendary pirate, while his followers repeatedly mistake his fear and fortunate survivals for overwhelming power 391 393 394 396.
During the war, Buggy reunites with the revived Roger. Overcome with emotion, he asks Roger to reform the crew and offers to become his intern again. He is reluctant to leave after reuniting with Roger, Rayleigh, Austin, and Shanks 405 406 419.
Cross Guild and the Pirate King Dream
Following the abolition of the Shichibukai, Buggy publicly orders his followers to fight the Marines while secretly preparing to flee. Crocodile arrives to collect money he borrowed for startup capital. She ultimately spares him and allows him to join her new company to repay the debt, valuing his resources and connections 546 547.
Buggy’s followers produce a Cross Guild poster depicting him as the leader, angering Crocodile and Mihawk. Mihawk proposes retaining him as a figurehead, allowing them to develop their influence without taking the public leadership role themselves. Buggy becomes an Emperor, although the former Shichibukai continue directing the organization’s operations 557 558 612.
News that Shanks has entered the One Piece race revives Buggy’s buried ambitions. He challenges Crocodile and Mihawk’s preference for military power and security, declaring his wish to become Pirate King. Blackbeard endorses the speech, while Austin supplies the Inspiration Captain’s Hat to strengthen Buggy’s ability to rally supporters 583 584.
Buggy later joins the Cross Guild’s assault on Impel Down to recruit prisoners for his Pirate King campaign. He confronts Doflamingo for killing potential recruits and, during the escape, fires a Buggy Cannon that blasts a large hole through the Gate of Justice 610 611 612 613.
Different Time and Space
Later chapters depict a separate sequence in which Austin is a Marine rather than Buggy’s fellow intern. Buggy and Shanks initially question why Roger wants to recruit Austin; they later meet him aboard the Roger Pirates’ ship after the Battle of Edd War 621 637.
In this sequence, Buggy and Shanks attend Roger’s execution at Loguetown and encounter Marine Vice Admiral Austin. Buggy’s boast that he does not fear Marines immediately collapses when Austin appears, though Austin ultimately lets the pair go 659 661.
Appearance
- Red nose: His signature feature from childhood onward; references to it provoke immediate anger 1 275 393.
- Clown clothing: Wears a clown costume and orange cape while commanding his East Blue crew 171.
- Makeup and gloves: Shown wearing thick red lipstick and white gloves 172 323.
- Captain’s hat: Later wears a red-and-white striped skull hat enhanced with the Inspiration Fruit’s ability 584.
- Blue hair: Explicitly described in the different-time-and-space Loguetown encounter 661.
Personality
Buggy combines theatrical arrogance with pronounced fear of stronger opponents. He boasts freely before his followers, but threats from Admirals, Whitebeard, or the Marines often leave him panicking or planning an escape. His followers habitually interpret these situations as proof of hidden confidence and strength 393 396 546.
His affection for Austin is unusually sincere. He follows Austin’s exploits, believes in his survival through a long absence, and keeps preparing orange juice for his return. Around Austin and Shanks, he speaks as a childhood friend rather than adjusting his behavior to their public standing. His loyalty does not make him benevolent: the same orange-juice promise becomes justification for exploiting Nami’s family 173 323 324 328.
Feeling overshadowed by Austin and Shanks leads Buggy to suppress his own dreams. He initially doubts that he deserves to become Pirate King, but eventually confronts that insecurity and challenges his much stronger partners. His renewed ambition also makes him more willing to stand up to Doflamingo and take risks for his friends 174 583 596 612.
Abilities & Skills
Chop-Chop Fruit
- Separates and reassembles his body, allowing individual parts—including hands and his upper body—to move independently 172 328.
- Passively survives sword slashes, including Mihawk cutting him into hundreds of pieces 172 393.
- Austin explains that Haki-coated slashes still cannot harm him if they fail to contact his physical body 172.
- Limits: Bullets, punches, and tearing attacks remain dangerous. Arlong’s bite injures his shoulder, and Mihawk knocks him away with the back of his blade 15 172 276 393.
- His separation ability also lets him survive Doflamingo’s cutting threads and immediately reform 612.
Haki and Physical Combat
- Uses rudimentary Armament Haki, producing faint blackening on his fist against Arlong 276.
- Defeats Arlong with a single punch after enduring substantial injuries 276.
- His Emperor title does not establish Emperor-level combat strength: during the Uta incident, he falls below the minimum Vice Admiral-level strength needed to trigger Austin’s threat-based instinctive attacks 595.
Explosives
- Buggy Ball: A compact explosive deployed from his shoe; one blast incapacitates most of Arlong’s assembled fish-men 276.
- Buggy Cannon: Launches Buggy Balls while his separated body floats in the air. Against Tot Musica, the explosions do no damage but draw the monster’s attention 596.
- A later cannon shot blows a large hole in the Gate of Justice, enabling the Cross Guild’s escape 613.
Leadership and Public Speaking
- Naturally excels at energizing crowds and encouraging his followers’ admiration 323.
- Turns his Roger Pirates background and friendship with Austin into powerful recruiting assets 391 611.
- The Inspiration Captain’s Hat strengthens his speeches enough to stir even Crocodile and Mihawk before they recognize the influence 584.
- Within the Cross Guild, serves as the intermediary between Austin, the former Shichibukai, and the rank-and-file followers; strategic decisions remain with the former Shichibukai 612.
“Conqueror’s Luck”
- An informal description of Buggy’s extraordinary fortune, not a confirmed form of Haki 11 12.
- Buggy believes his luck may have caused the storm that saved the Roger Pirates; Austin privately considers Roger’s destiny the likelier cause 12.
- His survival of Loguetown’s lightning and fire further fuels his followers’ belief that he is a monster 335.
Apparent Splitting of Kuzan
- During the Marineford broadcast, Kuzan’s ice bird and body shatter just before reaching Buggy 396.
- The summary attributes this to Buggy’s Devil Fruit, but the detailed passage places Austin’s reassuring voice immediately before the effect. Buggy’s followers then infer that his fruit can split external targets 396.
- The scene therefore does not clearly establish that Buggy independently developed environmental splitting or awakened his fruit 396.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Inspiration Captain’s Hat — Created by Vegapunk at Austin’s request using the Inspiration Fruit’s ability. It boosts morale and complements Buggy’s talent for persuasion 584.
- Buggy Balls — Compact explosives used against groups of enemies and launched through his Buggy Cannon technique 276 596.
- Dagger — Wields it with a detached hand to disarm Bellemere 328.
- Cleaver — Raises it during his attempted execution of Luffy in Loguetown 334.
- Treasure maps from Austin — Artificially aged maps drawn by Austin; the destinations are supplied with treasure through Sammy’s arrangements 172.
- Broadcast Den Den Mushi — Entrusted to him by Austin for the Summit War broadcast; its special treatment prevents Marine interference 393 396.
Relationships
- Austin — Childhood crewmate, best friend, and supporter of his Pirate King ambition. Buggy calls him his sworn brother and attacks Tot Musica out of anger over the danger to him 173 324 584 596.
- Shanks — Childhood friend and fellow trainee. Their split follows Buggy’s misunderstanding of Shanks’ decision to delay pursuing Laugh Tale; resentment persists even after Austin explains it. Shanks nevertheless tries to protect him from Tot Musica 48 173 588 596.
- Gol D. Roger — Former captain and childhood protector. Buggy mourns his execution deeply and, upon his revival, asks to serve as his intern again 28 47 405 406.
- Silvers Rayleigh — Former vice-captain whom Buggy seeks out for reassurance before Roger’s execution 28.
- Mihawk — Cross Guild partner who accepts Buggy’s usefulness as a figurehead despite disliking his inflated reputation. Later protects his position when Doflamingo threatens him 557 612.
- Crocodile — Creditor and Cross Guild partner. Spares Buggy to use his resources but resents being publicly depicted as his subordinate 546 547 557.
- Mr. 3 — Close associate repeatedly described as Buggy’s “true Emperor’s First Mate.” Accompanies him on the later Impel Down raid and shields against splashing poison 584 610 611.
- Nami and Bellemere’s family — Initially saves Bellemere from Arlong, then seizes their grove and imposes oppressive orange tributes 276 323 328.
- Luffy — Enemy who defeats him over Cocoyasi Village’s extortion; later becomes his temporary ally during the Impel Down jailbreak 329 385 386.
- Doflamingo — Cross Guild member whom Buggy confronts for killing prospective recruits, demonstrating his growing willingness to challenge stronger pirates 612.
