Background / History

Chang'e was originally associated with Hou Yi, who was once celebrated as a hero after shooting down the suns. According to Chang'e, Hou Yi gradually became violent, suspicious, and obsessed with gaining eternal power. When he acquired the Elixir of Immortality, she stole it to prevent him from becoming an immortal tyrant, accepting infamy to protect both him and the world. 93

Several immortals and gods who supported Hou Yi distorted her motives and accused her of greed and treachery. The Jade Emperor punished her for disrupting the Heavenly Dao and stealing divine medicine, binding her soul to the Taiyin Star and Guanghan Palace through the law-bound Taiyin Shackles. The punishment granted her immortality while condemning her to eons of isolation. 93
