Obito, Kakashi, and their teammates survived the Forest of Death and prepared for the Chunin Exams while Mu Yue began training a large group of genin. The preliminary matches advanced to the tournament, where Rin lost to Kisame, Guy defeated Kurosawa, and Obito prepared to face Mei Terumi.

• Madara told Black Zetsu that Obito’s overflowing love could awaken great power and make him easy to manipulate, while Zabuza, Kisame, and Kurosawa attacked Shiomizu’s team in the Forest of Death.
• Obito and Kakashi intervened to protect their injured teammates, fought Zabuza’s group alongside Rin, Guy, Genma, and Ebisu, and defeated the threat of Akutami Hideyuki with Kakashi’s Transparent World-assisted strike.
• Mu Yue treated the survivors and trained Kakashi, Obito, and Rin, while the preliminary matches sent all three of them and other candidates into the Chunin Exam tournament.
• Mu Yue won Hiruzen’s approval to teach Chakra Nature Transformation and began special training for 694 genin, dividing them into groups for chakra control, taijutsu, ninjutsu, and nature transformation.
• Kisame defeated Yamashiro Aoba, Rin defeated Shiomizu with a Water Clone, and Guy defeated Noguchi Nobuhide with a three-gate kick as the tournament began.
• Obito countered Asuma’s Wind and Fire Combination with Flame Breathing Chakra Mode and Fire Dragon Flame Bullet, while Mei defeated Haruya, Zabuza defeated Shinya, and Kakashi quickly beat Goichi.
• Kisame exhausted Rin and won their match, prompting Tsunade to agree to take Rin under her care, while Guy used sound to defeat Kurosawa through the Hidden Mist.
• Obito prepared to face Mei Terumi after Kakashi warned him to stay calm, and Zabuza realized the others expected him to lose.

Kakashi won the Chunin Exam final, and Mu Yue’s disciples were promoted as Mu Yue’s teaching gained official recognition. Mu Yue then led Obito, Kakashi, and Rin to the Land of Snow, where they stopped Dōtō’s coup and returned to Konoha after the Snow God Festival.

• Obito, Kakashi, and Might Guy advanced through the tournament, and Kakashi defeated Guy in the final while Obito resolved to surpass him.
• Hiruzen promoted Obito, Kakashi, Rin, Guy, Asuma, Shiomizu, and Aoba to chunin, then rejected Danzō’s demand to recruit Kakashi and Obito into Root.
• Mu Yue put his disciples through intensive Breathing Technique and Ninjutsu training, and Kakashi defeated Shisui before Hiruzen appointed Mu Yue Vice Principal.
• Mu Yue accepted an A-rank mission to protect Princess Koyuki in the Land of Snow, where he discovered Dōtō’s coup plans and warned Sōsetsu.
• Dōtō launched his attack, but Mu Yue fought off the Snow ninja while Kakashi and Obito stopped Dōtō from reaching Sōsetsu and Koyuki.
• Mu Yue trapped Kankuro Hifū and the Snow ninja in a frozen water sphere, and Sōsetsu named Mu Yue the Ice and Snow Hero and his disciples Ice and Snow Warriors.
• Mu Yue and his team celebrated the Snow God Festival, then returned to Konoha after Obito gave Koyuki two test papers he had arranged to have written.
• Hiruzen rewarded Mu Yue with the Flying Thunder God Technique, and Mu Yue demonstrated Ice Release before Obito and Kakashi began training together.

Mu Yue trained Root and Anbu in new techniques while advancing his own research and guiding his disciples. As Kirigakure’s war with Konoha began, his team formed and earned permission to take an early C-rank mission in the Land of Rivers.

• Mu Yue trained Root and Anbu together, developed the Dark Breathing Method, and earned Hiruzen Sarutobi’s approval to teach it.
• Might Guy opened the fourth gate and defeated Kakashi in a spar, and Hiruzen Sarutobi announced that Kirigakure had declared war on Konoha.
• Shisui proved to Uchiha Nobuhiro that he was strong enough to become a ninja, while Minato Namikaze led Kakashi, Obito, and Nohara Rin on a mission in the Land of Grass.
• Uchiha Madara decided Minato’s presence made Obito too difficult to target and named Shisui as a backup candidate for his plan.
• Mu Yue tested Anko, Shisui, and Shizune with a bell exercise, but none of them could take a bell from him.
• Mu Yue’s team completed its D-rank missions and trained over the following week, and he taught Asuma Wind Breathing.
• Hiruzen Sarutobi approved Mu Yue’s team for early C-rank missions, and Mu Yue chose a bandit-elimination mission in the Northern Land of Rivers.

Mu Yue’s team investigated Anrokuzan in Rōran, where Naruto and Yamato arrived from the future and briefly reunited Naruto with Minato before returning to their own time. Back in Konoha, Mu Yue’s students learned more about the future and encountered the young Akatsuki in the Land of Rain, while their new combat tests ended with Might Guy defeating Kakashi and Shisui.

• Mu Yue encountered Yahiko, Konan, and Nagato during a bandit mission, then warned Shisui that some members of their group were far beyond his strength.
• Mu Yue mastered Flying Thunder God and led Obito, Kakashi, and Nohara Rin to Rōran, where they met Naruto Uzumaki and Yamato, time travelers from the future.
• Mu Yue and his students exposed Anrokuzan’s crimes and defeated him, while Naruto trained with Mu Yue and met Jiraiya and Minato before Mu Yue’s destruction of Anrokuzan sent Naruto and Yamato home.
• After Naruto and Yamato returned to their time, Obito told Shisui that future intelligence predicted Mu Yue’s death and the Uchiha Clan Massacre, and Shisui awakened his Three-Tomoe Sharingan and vowed to help prevent both.
• Mu Yue disguised himself to meet Yahiko and Nagato in the Land of Rain, refused Yahiko’s invitation to join Akatsuki, and later identified Nagato’s eyes as the Rinnegan.
• Obito, Kakashi, and Shisui heard villagers praise Akatsuki’s work for peace, then met Yahiko and Nagato, while Kakashi shared the future’s grim account of Akatsuki with Might Guy.
• Mu Yue’s disciples held their first combat tests, where Shisui defeated Obito with Armament Haki and Might Guy beat both Kakashi and Shisui with Golden Horizon Line.
