History

Founding

Konoha was founded when the Senju and Uchiha clans united during the Warring States Period. Their purpose was to protect younger clan members from becoming child soldiers, draw other ninja clans into the new settlement, and end the era of constant clan warfare. 1

Hashirama Senju became the First Hokage. After his death, Tobirama Senju succeeded him as the Second Hokage and established several of Konoha's foundational institutions. 252 263

“Where the leaves of Konoha dance, fire lives on. The fire's light will continue to illuminate the village and make new leaves sprout.” 1

Uchiha administration

Tobirama placed the Uchiha Clan in charge of the Konoha Police Force. The arrangement recognized the clan's contributions but also fostered suspicion toward it; a later Uchiha rebellion was suppressed by the Anbu, worsening the clan's public reputation. 252

The Police Force's Uchiha-only staffing remained politically contentious. Shisui later proposed opening it to non-Uchiha Konoha ninja to reduce distrust toward the clan. 517

Education

Ninja Academy

Tobirama founded the Ninja Academy. With limited clan exceptions, prospective ninja were required to attend and pass its graduation examination before becoming genin. 263

Before Hanyu Mu Yue's reforms, the Academy's teaching quality was uneven. Many instructors were chūnin with limited prospects for further growth, while stronger ninja generally favored missions for income and training; advanced subjects such as Chakra Nature Transformation were therefore not part of the regular curriculum. 28 317

Mu Yue's class demonstrated a major improvement over this standard: its average theory score exceeded other classes by twenty to thirty points, it took the top two practical-combat positions, and its students showed superior command of basic techniques. 21

Internships and special training

Mu Yue proposed an internship program for high-performing Academy students, placing them in groups under capable instructors and limiting them to D- and C-rank missions. Hiruzen Sarutobi expanded the proposed intake beyond the original top fifteen students. 138 147

Holiday Special Training introduced advanced material, including Chakra Nature Transformation, to students before graduation. Mu Yue's ability to teach all five basic Chakra Natures enabled the program despite the Academy's usual lack of qualified instructors. 317 339

Academy reform

After becoming Fourth Hokage, Mu Yue proposed replacing the six-year Academy system with a four-year elementary division and a three-year middle-school division. Students would no longer become official ninja after elementary graduation; completing middle school would become mandatory. 689 693

The reforms were formally implemented in the following school year. The curriculum was later expanded again into five years of elementary school and four years of middle school, alongside revised teaching materials and graduation standards. 719 759

Ninja University

Mu Yue had envisioned a higher institution for specialized studies—including Sealing Jutsu, barrier techniques, and Medical Ninjutsu—long before it was politically feasible. 249

With the Ninja World Alliance's resources, Ninja University was eventually established in Six Paths City. It accepts exceptional ninja-school students, talented young ninja, and research-oriented students; its faculty begins at Special Jōnin level and includes renowned elite ninja from across the ninja world. 816 820

Mu Yue founded the university both to develop elite talent and to reduce the likelihood that minors would be sent into future wars. 820

Major conflicts and diplomacy

Wars with the Great Ninja Villages

Iwagakure declared war on Konoha, prompting a Jōnin Meeting under Hiruzen Sarutobi. Konoha chose to reinforce its borders and monitor Iwagakure through Kusagakure rather than launch an immediate offensive, partly due to the threat posed by Kumogakure. 128

During the conflict with Kirigakure, Orochimaru used deceptive deployments to lure the Hidden Mist Village into attacking. The Seven Ninja Swordsmen were sent to disrupt Konoha's logistics, but Konoha's young ninja and Mu Yue inflicted severe losses on them. 424 433

Konoha and Kirigakure later emerged victorious against Iwagakure, Kumogakure, and Sunagakure. The defeated villages surrendered, and the Five Kage negotiated peace terms. 656

Five-Village Alliance

The Five Great Ninja Villages agreed to end hostilities, withdraw their forces, settle reparations, and form an alliance. Hiruzen described the agreement as the beginning of a new era of peace. 657

Konoha subsequently hosted exchange events with Kirigakure. Its chūnin and jōnin performances, including Kakashi's defeat of Jūzō Biwa with a single slash, demonstrated the village's growing gap in strength over its former opponent. 708 709

Konoha and Ninshu

Konoha's relationship with Ninshu was initially hostile. Negotiations led by Orochimaru failed, and the resulting tension caused residents to leave Six Paths City out of fear of a coming war. 665 672

The two sides later cooperated on Puppet Prostheses: Ninshu supplied prosthetic limbs and related technology, while Konoha provided payment and technology useful to Ninshu. 711 716

After Mu Yue's dual identity as Konoha's Fourth Hokage and Ninshu's master became public, Konoha, Ninshu, and the Five Great Ninja Villages announced an alliance dedicated to safeguarding peace. 755
