Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Humanoid puppet body | 430 442 | His lifelike flesh-and-blood appearance is a disguise over a body that is itself a Magical Artifact. Qin Yang cannot distinguish one of his flesh puppets from a real person. |
| Second form | 508 793 | Transforms into a huge segmented, armored form—described as a centipede/millipede or Armored Dragon True Body—for greater mobility, containment, and resilience. |
| Third form | 818 920 | An angry-faced combat form with substantially increased physical defense; it withstands attacks comparable to those of a half-step Dao Lord body refiner. |
| Thread-controlled Puppet Master state | 920 | After Tai Hao damages his successive forms, a sad human phantom manifests and controls his body with illusory threads. His body exceeds ordinary physical limits and directly contests Tai Hao. |
| Seal disruption | 922 | Tai Hao breaks the outermost layer of a seal placed on him; the older seal of Tai Yi begins to emerge, leaving the Puppet Master with limited time. |
Background / History
The Puppet Master emerged from the Sea of Thoughts believing himself to be a recreation of the Ancient-era Puppet Master. He had endured innumerable illusory reincarnations and feared that leaving one illusion had only placed him in another. His wish to locate the Geomancer's mausoleum stemmed from a need to verify that he had truly existed in the Ancient era and had escaped the cycle. 436
Qin Yang encountered him after the Puppet Master attempted to coerce him into cooperation. Qin Yang instead completely refined him, establishing a master-subordinate bond that prevented the Puppet Master from turning against him. The Puppet Master accepted the arrangement after Qin Yang promised to take him away if he survived. 429 430
His supposed identity became increasingly uncertain. He recalled connections with the Geomancer, Dream Master, Painter, and other Ancient Human Race masters, while displaying puppetcraft far beyond normal cultivators. Qin Yang eventually considered that Mo Yang might not be a copy at all, but the genuine Ancient Puppet Master who entered the Sea of Thoughts to exploit its endless time. 436 755 756
A Demon Race spy later impersonated the Puppet Master and was killed by Qin Yang. This did not end Mo Yang's partnership with Qin Yang; the real Puppet Master continued to act as his guard and operative afterward. 457 495
Appearance
The Puppet Master commonly presents himself as a human with a flesh-and-blood disguise. Beneath it is an artificial body whose default face bears a stiff, eerie smile. Damage, combat, or powerful auras can strip away the disguise and reveal his true puppet form. 430 508
- A lifelike flesh disguise conceals his mechanical nature. 430
- His undisguised humanoid face has a rigid smile that can shift into expressionless or angry forms. 508 920
- He can detach and reattach his own head without apparent harm. 436
- His body can collapse into sand-sized particles, become an enormous mechanical insect, or assume a centipede-like form over a thousand zhang long. 441 508
- In his thread-controlled state, an ethereal sad-faced human phantom appears behind him and manipulates his body through illusory lines. 920
Personality
The Puppet Master is blunt, impulsive, and intensely battle-minded. Although Qin Yang often orders him not to fight, he readily escalates confrontations and can become excited simply because an enemy has come to kill Qin Yang. His tendency to prioritize annihilating an opponent over preserving a corpse or completing the original objective repeatedly frustrates Qin Yang. 440 508 557
His apparent foolishness conceals long experience and genuine skill. He can be proud of his mechanisms, takes satisfaction in simple solutions, and sometimes misreads sarcasm as praise. Yet he is capable of prolonged contemplation, and his reflections on his lack of memories, flesh, soul, and emotions reveal deep uncertainty about whether he is truly alive. 495 755
He is loyal to Qin Yang after being refined and shows a strong protective instinct, but this loyalty is exploitable. The Illusory Sea Old Thief can manipulate him through illusion techniques, one of the Puppet Master's most serious weaknesses. 673 648
Abilities & Skills
Puppet Body and Transformations
The Puppet Master's body is a self-made treasure with exceptional durability. His human form is not his strongest state, and he can alter his size, structure, and combat configuration as needed. 442 508
- Endures attacks that would destroy cultivators of comparable realm; he claims ordinary opponents cannot kill him even if he stands still. 445
- Uses armored segmented forms to bind, envelop, and crush powerful opponents. 508 793
- Withstands the force released by the stone door in the Ancient Underworld fragment, though the blow sends him flying. 771
- His third form survives direct combat against Tai Hao, but eventually develops cracks under the Heavenly Emperor's sustained force. 920
- Limit: His body is highly susceptible to illusion; powerful illusionists can trap or control him despite his physical strength. 648
Puppetcraft and Flesh Disguises
He creates mechanical puppets, flesh puppets, surveillance constructs, and combat golems in a wide range of sizes. His craft can imitate living beings convincingly enough to deceive Qin Yang and Black Shadow. 430
- Produces lifelike flesh puppets, including a disposable duplicate of himself that can simulate death under killing intent. 441
- Creates tiny scouts, including mosquito-like flesh puppets and mechanical rats. 434 539
- Conceals puppets inside a target's hands and feet for long-term surveillance. 495
- Uses detachable body parts as independent puppets to alter and reinforce larger constructs. 494
- Builds lockable mechanical message containers designed to destroy their contents if opened incorrectly. 539
Destruction Balls and Combat Arrays
The Puppet Master's preferred killing method combines puppets, traps, and Destruction Balls—explosive constructs that annihilate targets rather than merely defeat them. 508
- Plants multiple enhanced Destruction Balls throughout a prepared area and can use his own body as Qin Yang's shelter during detonation. 508
- Deploys self-destructing golems that release corrosive black liquid before detonating around a target. 508
- Uses large-scale puppet deployments to seal escape routes over an area spanning roughly a thousand miles. 602
- Can transform into a massive mechanical worm, engulf an enemy, and detonate Destruction Balls within the enclosed space. 557
- Limit: His destructive methods often leave no corpse, undermining Qin Yang's Corpse Touching plans. 508 557
Detection and Tracking
He can locate targets through puppets and detect hidden individuals or objects, but his tracking is not infallible. 447
- Tracked a Shadow Kill Dao practitioner through a dispatched puppet. 447
- Located Murong Jiayue's underground refuge and sealed the surrounding area before entering. 444
- Sent a Mechanical Treasure Hunting Mouse to search for traces of Ancient mechanical puppets and locate an undiscovered mausoleum. 437
- Limit: He lost the Shadow Kill Dao user after the target destroyed his puppet and concealed their trail. 447
Presence Concealment
The Puppet Master can reduce his presence so thoroughly that Qin Yang may fail to notice him until after leaving an area. He does not know how he performs this technique. 808
- Avoided Qin Kun's notice inside the Earth Cave. 808
- His ability later serves as a reference point for evaluating the Star Concealment authority. 941

- Geomancer / Feng Shui Master — Possibly an Ancient-era friend. The Puppet Master believes they were close through many reincarnations and seeks his mausoleum to confirm his own identity. 436
- Dream Master — A feared counter to the Puppet Master's abilities; he states that nearly all of his mechanical puppets are ineffective against the Dream Master. 436
- Illusory Sea Old Thief — Exploits the Puppet Master's poor resistance to illusion and temporarily controls him at the Northern Border. 672 673
- Tai Hao — Enemy who recognizes him as a Human Race Puppet Master and damages the seal suppressing his deeper state. 920 922
- Wedding Dress — Qin Yang entrusts the Puppet Master with delivering a message to her through dreams. 430
