Background / History
Black Shadow was an ancient body refiner whose cultivation turned his physical body into the foundation of an undying consciousness. According to his later account, Qin Kun and Fu Jun lured him into a trap, dismembered him, sealed his consciousness in his left hand, and cast it into the Sea Eye to keep Fu Jun’s power from falling into a Deity’s hands 327 1052. His severed left hand fell into the Dead Sea and became a catalyst for widespread upheaval, driving Sea Race communities from their territories and contributing to the region’s long-term instability 732.
While imprisoned, Black Shadow leaked tiny amounts of power and information into the outside world. Those who received his teachings founded sects, cultivated according to his methods, and unknowingly strengthened him after death. He also manipulated groups into repeatedly reinforcing his seal with the very “keys” that gradually weakened it 259. When a crack finally appeared, he sent out a portion of his consciousness and power, intending to use Qin Yang’s body for a perfect possession 260.
Qin Yang disrupted this plan by severing his own memories of the seal and later fully refining the Demon Hand containing Black Shadow’s power. Unable to directly harm the artifact’s owner, Black Shadow tried to ruin Qin Yang’s future by forcibly flooding him with excessive power; instead, Qin Yang used the surge to advance his body into the Five Elements Spirit Body 261 263. With his options narrowed, Black Shadow accepted a deal: he would provide ancient knowledge, beginning with the Six Soul Runes, in return for the possibility of eventual freedom 270.
After years as a sealed resident of Qin Yang’s Sea Eye, Black Shadow chose reincarnation rather than attempting to reclaim his original body. Qin Yang found him a Five-Colored Turtle egg, allowing him to become independent of the Demon Hand and cultivate again from a new life 691 692.
His loyalty to Qin Yang gradually became genuine. He later left the Netherworld Ship to confront Fu Jun’s Avatar directly, warning it against targeting Qin Yang and ultimately destroying the Avatar with methods he knew Fu Jun could not evade 923 924. When Fu Jun returned and sought information about lost power, Black Shadow ultimately chose to stand firmly with Qin Yang rather than risk being deceived again 1051 1052.
Appearance
In his sealed state, Black Shadow usually appeared as an unstable humanoid shadow or an illusory face emerging from the Demon Hand. He could alter his appearance, including imitating Duan Tianqiong, but lacked a true physical body 261.
After reincarnation, he takes the form of a Five-Colored Turtle.
- Naturally possesses affinity for all five elements 800 1052.
- Wears a tortoise shell that conceals black demonic markings across his body 924.
- Can retract his head and limbs into his shell when frightened, threatened, or trying to avoid Qin Yang 800.
- His released demonic markings dramatically raise his aura, though the shell suppresses that power again when worn 924.
Personality
Black Shadow is calculating, patient, and exceptionally skilled at manipulating desperation. During his imprisonment, he spent tens of thousands of years turning sects, seals, enemies, and fragments of information into parts of a long escape plan 259. He regularly uses temptation, provocation, threats, and selective truths to steer others toward actions that benefit him.
Despite his ancient status, he is also cowardly when facing beings connected to his death or capable of truly destroying him. He fears Qin Kun, Fu Jun, the Ancient Underworld’s surviving powers, and Qin Yang’s tendency to hold grudges 283 800 1051. His caution grows into a deliberate principle after his encounter with Fu Jun: he no longer believes that clever words are worth trusting 924.
His relationship with Qin Yang changes him. Once willing to sacrifice Qin Yang for freedom, Black Shadow eventually recognizes Qin Yang’s character as fundamentally different from the ancient powers he knew. This leads him to protect Qin Yang even when doing so risks confrontation with Fu Jun and other major figures 923 1052.
Abilities & Skills
Undying Consciousness
Black Shadow’s consciousness originated from an extreme body-refining method in which his divine soul was integrated into his physical body.
- Survived dismemberment, sealing, and the destruction of his original world 327 923.
- Cannot naturally fade away and cannot commit suicide 317.
- Can persist independently of most of his body, provided a fragment carrying his consciousness remains.
- Is vulnerable to specific ancient powers, including Soul Sweeping and the Six Soul Runes 270.
- Can be suppressed by the Sea Eye and the Sea Eye Demon Stone despite his undying nature 317.
Residual Body and Demon Hand Control
Black Shadow’s severed left hand retained immense power and could function as both a source of energy and a prison.
- His left hand transformed into a massive sealed entity whose power was difficult for Qin Yang to digest even after refinement 283.
- As the Demon Hand’s Primordial Spirit, he retained secondary control over its energy 317.
- Could pour the Demon Hand’s power into Qin Yang, strengthening Qin Yang’s body and True Essence while attempting to force unsustainable growth 261.
- Could not directly injure or backlash against Qin Yang once the Demon Hand had been fully refined 261 263.
- Within the sealed area surrounding his left hand, he could mobilize part of its power and act as a major threat despite his weak turtle body outside 737.
Deception and Manipulation
Black Shadow is highly adept at exploiting information, fear, obsession, and conflicting desires.
- Manipulated sects over countless years into strengthening the seal that imprisoned him 259.
- Imitated Duan Tianqiong and drove both Duan Tianqiong and the Netherworld Captain toward mutual destruction 261.
- Used whispered encouragement and dark influence to intensify Duan Tianqiong’s obsession with killing the Netherworld Captain 261.
- Initially attempted to tempt Qin Yang with ancient inheritances, powerful corpses, and promises of easily obtainable power 283.
- Became increasingly wary of deception himself after recognizing Fu Jun’s methods 924.
Ancient Knowledge
Black Shadow’s greatest practical value after his suppression is his knowledge of the ancient era.
- Explained the Six Soul Runes and their Ancient Underworld origin 270.
- Identified the Rebirth Curse and Bloodline Reincarnation affecting Zhang Zhengyi 327.
- Provided information concerning Yinglong and the Mountain Ghost Temple 471.
- Correctly identified the entrance to the Incense Realm through an intuition he could not fully explain 686.
- Revealed that the Ancient Heavenly Court and Ancient Underworld included many races rather than being exclusively human institutions 692.
- His information can be outdated or incomplete because of his long isolation from the modern era 289 471.
False Body Imprint
Black Shadow taught Little Seventh a self-defense technique known as the False Body Imprint.
- Little Seventh learned it quickly enough to leave a concealed imprint on Qin Yang without his knowledge 680.
- The imprint could hide in Qin Yang’s hair, blend with his aura, and evade his detection 680.
- Black Shadow later admitted that he had taught Little Seventh various secretive methods behind Qin Yang’s back 691.
Equipment / Relics
- Demon Hand / Black Hand — Black Shadow’s severed left hand and former prison. Qin Yang fully refined it, giving Black Shadow only secondary authority over its power; Qin Yang later looted its remaining power 317 737.
- Tortoise Shell — Worn after reincarnation to conceal Black Shadow’s demonic markings and suppress the power he releases from them 924.
- Five-Colored Turtle Eggshell — Consumed after hatching as a source of power for his new body 692.
Relationships
- Qin Yang — Began as Black Shadow’s intended possession target and jailer; their coerced cooperation developed into companionship and open loyalty. Black Shadow ultimately chooses Qin Yang’s side over Fu Jun’s 260 270 923 1052.
- Qin Kun — The ancient enemy who killed, dismembered, and sealed Black Shadow. Black Shadow remains deeply afraid of him and avoids exposing matters that could provoke his wrath 283 800 1051.
- Fu Jun — A former conspirator in Black Shadow’s sealing and a master of deception. Black Shadow distrusts him, destroys one of his Avatars, and warns him not to target Qin Yang 924 1052.
- Little Seventh — A child Black Shadow secretly taught and entertained while confined in the Sea Eye. He instructed her in the False Body Imprint, later regretting the consequences 680 691.
- Ugly Chicken — Fellow Sea Eye resident and occasional accomplice in keeping secrets from Qin Yang; they were later forced into conflict by Baldy Qin’s rage 680 805.
- Verdant Grandma — Holds an intensely negative view of Black Shadow because his left hand’s arrival devastated the Dead Sea; she previously sealed him to prevent further trouble 732.
