Background
Old Yao spent three years hidden within a ring while drawing Xiao Yan's Dou Qi. After Xiao Yan discovers him, he manifests as a silver-haired soul phantom and is confronted over the stolen cultivation. Intrigued by Xiao Yan's Fire Kirin physique and abnormal cultivation speed, he recognizes him as an ideal candidate for Fen Jue and offers Shadowless Step and Eight Extremes Collapse as an apology. 2
He later becomes Xiao Yan's teacher, presenting him with a choice between the Earth-tier Intermediate Crimson Sun Art and the low-level Yellow-tier Flame Mantra. Xiao Yan chooses Flame Mantra without hesitation. 4
Before taking Xiao Yan as his disciple, Old Yao had treated Han Feng as his own son. Han Feng's betrayal ended that bond; when they meet again, Old Yao regards him with detached indifference and leaves his punishment to Xiao Yan. 94
Old Yao also bears a painful history with the Yao Clan, having been expelled from it in the past. Despite those grievances, he helps save Yao Dan during the Hall of Souls' assault on the Yao Clan, then chooses to leave after concluding that the clan must bear the consequences of its own actions. 171 179
