Background

Li Yaoshi was born into the Danyang Branch of the Longxi Li Clan as its youngest son. During an early bottleneck in his Pill Dao cultivation, his family sent him a boy and informed him that the child was his son. Taiyi named the boy Li Qingtong and accepted him as a disciple, though the boy preferred the nickname given by his late mother: Nezha. 132

Taiyi’s first meeting with Qingtong was marked by neglect. Preoccupied with refining pills, he made the child wait for half a month, then coldly assigned him a new name, cultivation resources, and an instruction not to disturb his alchemy. Qingtong later died while attempting the Fifth Realm True Form, leaving Taiyi deeply remorseful. Flat-Topped Mountain became Qingtong’s burial site, which Taiyi visited each Ghost Festival. 124 132 139

After his son’s death, Taiyi spent years reluctantly planting “seeds” for Louguan Dao by teaching or aiding promising juniors at his sect master’s request. Few reached even the threshold of Louguan Dao’s entry standards, and he did not accept another direct disciple for decades. 131

He taught Zhang Lishi the Tiger Demon Fist and once gifted him a demonic treasure. Years later, Zhang Lishi led Taiyi to Li Cunxiao, whose rapid advancement and unusual ability to bear eight demonic entities drew Taiyi’s attention. 131 275

Taiyi’s Bone-Illuminating Mirror revealed that Li Cunxiao carried the Wind Wheel—one half of the Wind Fire Wheels once associated with Qingtong. Taiyi is proud, impulsive, and notoriously capricious. His patience is largely reserved for pill refining and matters concerning his deceased son; when frustrated by the missing Wind Wheel, he became visibly irritable even toward allies. 119 130

His arrogance is tempered by long-standing regret. Qingtong’s death forced him to confront the consequences of his earlier neglect, making him hesitant to repeat the same mistakes with Li Cunxiao. He is still manipulative and possessive in his mentorship—initially hiding teachings, secretly entering dreams, and competing with Qici—but his actions consistently prioritize Li Cunxiao’s survival and growth. 132 139 183 219
