The World Martial Arts Tournament had begun with its first edition in Age 650. Held once every five years, it had now reached Age 750 and its twenty-first tournament.

Bulma enthusiastically arranged a private plane, even taking over the work of He-El's butler, Rabbit Can-Can. She prepared He-El's clothes, luggage, energy bars, logistical supplies, and everything else in advance. Then she, He-El, Yamcha, Puar, and Rabbit Can-Can boarded Capsule Corporation's private plane and flew toward Papaya Island.
Papaya Island lay among a cluster of islands east of South City. The Martial Arts Temple, led by Papaya Island, had hosted twenty editions of the World Martial Arts Tournament there.
This was now the twenty-first edition. The event gathered all the greatest human martial artists, with countless schools and styles represented. It was Earth's most prestigious martial arts competition.
It was also a contest for powerful martial artists to test what they had learned and display their strengths.
Each tournament was held on May 7.
On May 5, He-El and the others took the Capsule Corporation private plane arranged by Bulma and arrived at Papaya Island two days early. They stayed at a five-star hotel Bulma had arranged.
"The time isn't here yet, so let's take a look around Papaya Island first." After settling them into the hotel, Bulma came to He-El's room, clapped her hands, and made the suggestion with a beaming smile.
Because it hosted the world-famous World Martial Arts Tournament, Papaya Island attracted countless visitors and merchants. The island also had lively local celebrations, bustling day and night. It was vastly different from the futuristic West City and had a unique charm of its own.
