In Stephen Strange's precognitive dreams, Asgard had won the war against the Dark Elves and successfully obtained the Reality Stone.
But Odin knew that keeping two Infinity Stones together would draw the attention of cosmic powers and endanger Asgard. He also knew that the power of the Infinity Stones would eventually lead people into irreversible ruin. So Odin ordered Sif to take people and deliver the Reality Stone to The Collector for safekeeping.
And by sending it to The Collector, he had effectively delivered it straight into Thanos's hands.
The Reality Stone had been one of the easiest Stones for Thanos to acquire. All he had to do was wait for Asgard to bring it to him.
