Background and History

Stephen Strange was a leading neurosurgeon until a car accident damaged the nerves in his hands. He sought treatment through the Medical Rebirth Project, but the alien invasion of New York had destroyed its Regeneration Cradles and much of their production capacity. Unable to obtain a cure, he fell into despair 811.

The Ancient One opened a path for Strange to experience the life of another version of himself in a parallel universe. In the resulting dream, he studied magic, became Sorcerer Supreme, fought Thanos and died after Thanos wiped out half the universe's life. The experience remained vivid after he woke and led him to Kamar-Taj, where the Ancient One accepted him as a student. He resolved both to avert Thanos's victory and to save her from the death he had seen 812 822 823.

Strange learned rapidly. The Ancient One gave him access to Kamar-Taj's library and entrusted him with the Eye of Agamotto, which contains the Time Stone. The Cloak of Levitation subsequently chose him as its wearer. Although the Ancient One began preparing him to succeed her, Kamar-Taj's discovery that she had drawn upon Dark Energy disrupted the handover 822 823 829 860 866.

Strange tried to change the circumstances of the Ancient One's predicted death by taking her place at the New York Sanctum. Kaecilius instead confronted her at the Hong Kong Sanctum, where her body died. Afterward, Kamar-Taj sought to reclaim Strange's artifacts. He refused to surrender the Eye, believing Kamar-Taj could not safely guard the Time Stone. An artifact-free duel with Baron Mordo ended in a draw; Mordo remained acting Sorcerer Supreme, while Strange retained the Eye and Cloak 878 884 887.

The Ancient One's warning not to trust He-El made Strange increasingly wary of He-El's pursuit of the Infinity Stones. Strange later worked with Nick Fury to investigate him, controlling Kaecilius to enter the Earth United Government's presidential office. Their plan opened a dangerous route for Dormammu, and Mordo died in the ensuing confrontation. Strange blamed himself for the risk he had created and refused He-El's offer to cooperate against Thanos 887 988 989 991 995.

Strange subsequently sought Kamar-Taj's help against He-El and Thanos. Its elders distrusted him because of his ties to the Ancient One and his removal of the sealed Kaecilius; they appointed Wong, rather than Strange, as the new Sorcerer Supreme. Strange continued gathering allies and fighting while keeping the Time Stone from He-El 1080 1081 1123.

Personality

Proud and unwilling to accept the loss of his surgical career, Strange initially reacts to his injuries with anger. His dream of another life gives him a more composed manner and a purpose beyond restoring his hands, though he continues to recognize his own arrogance 811 822 823.

He is protective of the Ancient One and determined to prevent the catastrophe he foresaw. That determination also makes him willing to take severe risks: after Mordo's death, he recognizes the cruelty of putting others in danger for his plan and struggles with guilt 823 878 991 995.

Portals and spatial magic

Strange can open portals and construct precise tracking and teleportation circles 861.
