Class System

  • Assignment: Students are placed through a comprehensive assessment. Oreki identifies academics, physical fitness, interpersonal coordination, and serious personal flaws as relevant factors 4 6 8.
  • Fluid rankings: A–D labels change according to evaluation scores; they are not permanent identities attached to a particular group 4 183.
  • Monthly allowance: Each student receives Private Points equal to their class’s evaluation score multiplied by 100 3.
  • Graduation benefits: The school’s advertised advancement and employment treatment applies only to Class 3-A graduates. Classes B, C, and D receive diplomas from other high schools 3.
  • Individual escape route: A student can spend 20 million Private Points to transfer to a chosen class. The same amount can purchase exemption from expulsion 4 76.

Other Holders of the D Designation

Cohort Documented circumstances
Ryuuen’s cohort Originally Class C; falls to Class D after the Deserted Island Exam. Shiina Hiyori later takes over leadership following Ryuuen’s resignation 218 278 322.
New first-year Class D Includes Kazuomi Housen and Tsubasa Nanase. Nanase becomes its sole representative after Housen is expelled for violence 482 492 527.
Chabashira’s former student cohort Climbed from Class D to within one step of Class A before failing 12.

History

Enrollment and Early Collapse

Oreki visits Class 1-D with Masumi Kamuro to sell information about the school. He finds boys publicly discussing their female classmates’ bodies under surveillance cameras and warns that their conduct has already cost the class seven million points in living expenses. Hirata gathers classmates to hear the offer, but only eleven remain for the explanation 6 8.

The visit reveals a class with both conspicuous weaknesses and unusually capable students. Oreki attributes Horikita’s placement to her refusal to cooperate and suspects that Kushida and Hirata have serious histories outweighing their otherwise strong abilities. He nevertheless warns Kamuro that the students who stayed could become a threat to Class A if the class shed enough dead weight 8 9.

Learning the rules on the first day creates a possible opportunity for a Behavioral Standards Exam exemption. The exemption is not granted, however, and the class ultimately finishes its first-month assessment at zero. Its academic difficulties persist: Sudou subsequently fails an open-book exam and faces expulsion 11 92 96.

Leadership Attempts

Chabashira tries to make Horikita lead the class to Class B, using a five-million-point Private Points Card as leverage. Oreki concludes that she hopes to prepare the class for a stronger, unwilling leader—Ayanokouji. Horikita abandons the arrangement, while Chabashira considers recruiting Oreki himself 61 63 72.

Horikita later uses the school’s purchasing rules to protect failing students. Her actions improve the class’s score and reputation, although she receives only twenty of the fifty evaluation points she initially sought as compensation 96 98 102.

Deserted Island Breakthrough

Oreki chooses to help Class D gain points while protecting Class A’s lead. His plan is to make Classes B and C worry about the rising Class D rather than concentrate on overtaking his own class 115 116.

Kōenji supplies a major advantage by scouting all forty base-camp locations before the exam. Class A and Class D negotiate an agreement: Class D exchanges supplies for Class A, Class A makes monthly point payments, and Kōenji provides information on five bases 127 129.

The class wins the exam with 650 points. Ryuuen’s attempt to identify Kōenji as its leader is defeated when Meiyu Wang is revealed as the leader at the conclusion. The result puts the original Class D above Ryuuen’s cohort and leads to promotion to Class C 158 159 183 218.

VIP Exam and Internal Distrust

For the VIP Exam, Kushida supplies printed rules, Hirata explains the plan, and Horikita distributes backup phones. Oreki receives a monthly allocation of 10,800 points from Class D students for his intervention in the island exam 176 180.

Promotion does not eliminate the class’s internal problems. During the Sports Festival, Horikita asks Class B to lose individual matches deliberately so that weaker classmates avoid bottom-ten penalties. Later, classmates believe rumors about her obtaining advantages through her brother, damaging her remaining desire to belong to the class 224 225 341.

Class Vote and Command Tower Exam

The compulsory expulsion vote drives students into cliques and exposes the limits of Hirata’s conflict mediation. Oreki obtains support from all three other classes, securing 120 praise votes for Ayanokouji. Horikita pushes for Yamauchi’s expulsion despite Hirata’s aggressive opposition; Yamauchi is expelled 408 420 432.

In the Command Tower Exam, Ayanokouji holds the official commander position, while Horikita directs the class’s preparation and is identified as its true strategist. The class preserves specialists for favorable later events, wins swimming and English cloze, but loses the overall contest to Class A 440 447 453.

Second Year

The OAA evaluations reveal the class’s uneven composition: Kōenji receives a perfect overall score, Horikita earns an A rating, and Ike ranks last. Chabashira explains that the first cross-year written exam also tests communication, allowing weaker students to seek academically stronger first-year partners 486.

Kōenji subsequently pays 20 million points to transfer to Class A, becoming the first student to complete such a transfer. The remaining class later wins the Cultural Festival and regains Class C status. Ayanokouji also leaves for Class A after choosing a Class Transfer Ticket as his Sports Festival reward 525 646 651 673.

  • Its Command Tower event selection exploits varied specialties: swimming, basketball, English cloze, typing, mathematics, abacus calculation, kyudo, chess, sprinting, and rock-paper-scissors 440.

Cooperation and Academic Limits

  • Poor coordination is a defining weakness even among highly capable students, particularly Horikita and Kōenji at enrollment 8 486.
  • Favoritism, cliques, and susceptibility to rumors undermine collective decisions 341 408 409.
  • Academic improvement is possible: after guidance from Kōenji, Karuizawa and Sato reach C+ academic ratings, while Sakura reaches B- 489.
