Background / History
Kei had known Houtarou Oreki since middle school. Oreki later learns through his precognitive dreams that she had been bullied there and that he had saved her; Kei eventually confirms that they have known each other since that time 118 597.
Upon recognizing Oreki at school, Kei hugged him directly and later transferred him 80,000 private points after assuming he needed money. Oreki returned 30,000 points, leaving a 50,000-point debt he intended to repay twofold 19 59.
At school, Kei cultivates the persona of a tough, fashionable gyaru and becomes influential among the girls of Class D. The image is a defense mechanism: she uses it to avoid appearing vulnerable, but must constantly maintain it around her friends and classmates 118 153 198.
Appearance
Kei is consistently described as notably cute and fashion-conscious, with a carefully maintained gal-like presentation 185 558.
- Straight blonde hair 558
- Fair, delicate skin and meticulous grooming, even during the Uninhabited Island Exam 558
- Often wears jasmine perfume 451
- Projects a deliberately tough gyaru image through her expression, mannerisms, and social behavior 191 522
Personality
Kei is socially perceptive and highly conscious of how others see her. She understands that people wear “masks” to fit in and avoid being disliked, which informs her unusually tolerant view of others with hidden sides 251 522.
Behind her confrontational public demeanor, Kei is sensitive, protective of her relationships, and easily unsettled by the possibility of being replaced or abandoned. She maintains a smile even when distressed by Oreki's attention toward other girls, and she avoids openly revealing the standards she has for a romantic partner because they would make her feelings too obvious 313 477.
She can be compassionate despite her sharp presentation. When asked how she would treat someone whose outward personality was a façade, Kei answers that nobody is completely consistent inside and out 251.
