Tom Riddle

Tom Marvolo Riddle was a brilliant, charismatic Hogwarts student and a descendant of Salazar Slytherin. He gathered Slytherin students into the Walpurgis Knights, the precursor to the Death Eaters, and cultivated an image as the school’s exceptional “Slytherin Little Prince.” 288 368

During his fifth year, he opened the Chamber of Secrets, released the Basilisk, and accidentally killed Moaning Myrtle. He used her death to split his soul and create his first Horcrux: a diary containing his memories and emotions. He then framed Hagrid for the incident. 171 176 368

Riddle learned that he was a half-blood born after his mother used a Love Potion on Tom Riddle Sr. The revelation shattered his self-image; he murdered his father’s family, then murdered his Gaunt relatives and used the family ring to create another Horcrux. 356 368

After graduation, he worked as a clerk at Borgin and Burkes. He acquired Slytherin’s Locket and Hufflepuff’s Cup, converted them into Horcruxes, traveled for years seeking dangerous Dark Magic, and transformed himself from the handsome Tom Riddle into Voldemort. 184 368

Rise and First Fall

Voldemort became the leader of the Death Eaters and terrorized Britain for nearly a decade. His early pure-blood supporters eventually realized that he no longer represented their interests; his Horcrux-making, instability, and indiscriminate violence had made him an unpredictable terrorist. 288

After Snape relayed part of Trelawney’s prophecy, Voldemort sought children born to families that had defied him three times. He chose Neville Longbottom as his destined enemy, attacked him, left an S-shaped scar on his forehead, and was struck down by his own rebounded Killing Curse. 8 288

Remnant Soul and Quirrell Possession

Resurrection and Rebuilding

Barty Crouch Jr. found Voldemort’s remnant soul in Albania and brought him to Lane, an Undead Wizard from another world. Lane and Barty used advanced Dark Magic to resurrect Voldemort, though his new body was weak and he was temporarily forced to serve Lane. 304

Voldemort eventually killed Lane with an enhanced Killing Curse after Barty broke Lane’s formation. He then murdered Barty Crouch Jr. to ensure that no witness could reveal his humiliation under Lane. 316
