Background

Hermione is the daughter of Chris Granger and his wife, both dentists who own a dental clinic. Before Hogwarts, she encounters Ted during one of his street performances and immediately becomes fascinated by the possibility that his tricks are real magic. Her father reassures her that Hogwarts will teach magic, while Hermione insists that it must be “the best school.” 12 13

At Flourish and Blotts, Hermione formally meets Ted and is impressed by his work in Diagon Alley, self-study habits, musical talent, magic tricks, and raven. She asks him extensive questions about magic, chooses a Long-eared Owl named Magic, and begins corresponding with Ted almost daily before school begins. 13

Hermione arrives at Hogwarts already eager to learn and determined to enter Ravenclaw. During Sorting, she repeatedly demands Ravenclaw until the Sorting Hat relents; it notes that Gryffindor would have suited her as well. 17 19

Personality

Hermione is intensely curious about the magical world and approaches magic as a structured field of study rather than an instinctive art. She values theory, evidence, and systematic knowledge; this makes her especially frustrated by the unsupported claims in The Quibbler. 34 61

She is highly competitive, particularly with Ted. When his progress outpaces hers, she overworks herself to exhaustion before realizing she needs personal goals rather than treating every subject as a race against him. 65 124

Despite her academic intensity, Hermione is observant, principled, and protective of her friends. She worries when Ted investigates danger alone, joins the group’s mission against Voldemort to prevent reckless action, and shows concern even for Malfoy when he is abducted. 166 171

Her empathy extends beyond her immediate circle. She wants to buy a pet for Harriett so no friend feels left out, admires Helga Hufflepuff’s compassion, and later promises Nagini a more humane ending in the game world. 238 392 447

Abilities & Skills

Academic Magic and Research

Hermione is a scholar-type witch who improves through analysis, reading, and repeated study.

  • Learned several spells before beginning Hogwarts and studied multiple subjects ahead of the curriculum with Ted’s help. 15 31
  • Excels at Potions, Transfiguration, Charms, and Ancient Runes; by second year, her Transfiguration progress catches up to Ted’s natural pace. 118 124
  • Becomes Professor Bathsheba Babbling’s Ancient Runes class representative, collecting and grading homework. 253
  • Wins the Silver Cauldron Award, placing second in the International Wizarding Academy Potions Tournament. 403
  • Her scholarly approach can become self-destructive when she treats study as competition rather than a sustainable pursuit. 65

Transfiguration and Summoning

Hermione uses Transfiguration creatively for battlefield control and distraction.

  • Created swarms of paper butterflies to obscure and distract a Modified Troll, though her low first-year Magic Power limited the technique to less than three minutes. 45
  • Uses summoning-style Transfiguration in combat, including swarms of bats, bees, birds, and a stone serpent. 179 181
  • In later battles, she combines Transfiguration with frost magic and practical spell interactions rather than relying on a single specialty. 273 276

Holy Light and Healing Magic

Hermione adapts Holy Light into her own magical system rather than using it solely as Neville’s combat technique.

  • Channels positive mental energy into the Holy Light Shield Charm, greatly increasing its defensive strength. 256
  • Studies healing spells with Madam Pomfrey to supplement her defensive magic. 256
  • Continues exploring meditation and yoga to improve focus, mental recovery, and concentration. 130 258

Spellcraft and Area Magic

Hermione develops a combat style centered on large-scale elemental spells, control, and tactical pressure.

  • Invented Evil Curse: Magic Spinning, which violently spins a target in midair, and Fire Crow Assault, which creates a persistent attacking fire crow. 276
  • Learned the Weightlessness Charm and uses Expansion Charm tactics, such as enlarging a launched stone in midair to crush an enemy. 276
  • Her Wizard Alliance build uses Fire Crow Assault, Ice Shield, Blizzard, and Crow Assault, establishing her as the team’s area-of-effect firepower. 296
  • Later focuses her research on Transfiguration, large-scale magic, and ice- and fire-aligned spells. 443

Tactical Command

Hermione combines her analytical habits with battlefield coordination.

  • Is regarded as the team’s “brain” because of her broad spell knowledge and ability to respond appropriately to changing situations. 339
  • Serves as dispatcher in Hogwarts’ central command room during the Goblin offensive, monitoring the battlefield and directing elite teams and Aurors toward threatened areas. 427
  • Draws upon the Demon Subduing Array to cast large-scale magic during the later battle against Voldemort’s forces. 477

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Magic — Hermione’s Long-eared Owl, chosen in Diagon Alley and used for frequent correspondence before Hogwarts. 13
  • Death-Proof Goggles — Worn with Ted during investigations amid the Chamber of Secrets crisis. 166
  • Ten Thousand Realms Spell Breaking Dagger — A Basilisk-fang dagger made by Ted; Hermione uses it to pierce and dispel a hostile magical door. 292
  • Protective combat gear — By the conflict with Umbridge, she carries a tactical belt stocked with potions and tools, magical goggles, jewelry, and a wand. 424

Relationships

  • Ted Epiphany — Her earliest magical-world friend, study partner, mentor, research collaborator, and eventual romantic partner. Their correspondence begins before Hogwarts, and their relationship develops openly over later school years. 13 322 413
  • Harriett Potter — Close friend and fellow Little Wizard. Hermione gives Harriett Muggle contact lenses, later buys Crookshanks for her, and supports her during the group’s adventures. 61 238
  • Neville Longbottom — Friend and teammate. They share Holy Light training, and Hermione helps support his growth into a capable combatant. 256 289
  • Ron Weasley — Friend and frequent academic target of her criticism; Ron nevertheless consistently supports her, especially after she becomes involved in grading Ancient Runes homework. 246
  • Jerry — Friend and teammate. They join Neville and Harriett in forming a rescue team when Ron and Jerry are trapped in Hogsmeade. 289
  • Fleur Delacour — A rival who triggers Hermione’s competitive streak, particularly after Hermione loses to her in the Seven Schools Tournament. Their rivalry remains tempered by mutual recognition. 330 360 369
  • Klara Sparkle — Hermione’s Gnome roommate, whose petrification makes the Basilisk threat personal to Hermione. 148

Story Role / Major Arcs

First-Year Adventures

Hermione becomes part of the core Little Wizards group shortly after arriving at Hogwarts. During the Philosopher’s Stone incident, she joins the mission to stop Voldemort, helps navigate the obstacles beneath Fluffy, and completes an incomplete magical ritual through knowledge and reasoning. Dumbledore awards Ravenclaw fifty points for her contribution. 80 82 98

Chamber of Secrets

Hermione proposes using Polyjuice Potion to question Malfoy about the Chamber of Secrets. The plan goes wrong when cat hair contaminates her potion, transforming her into a catgirl and leaving her hospitalized over Christmas. Her friends remain with her in the Hospital Wing rather than attending the feast. 148 153

After recovering, she remains involved in the Chamber investigation and joins the mission to rescue Malfoy. During the Basilisk battle, she summons and controls a stone serpent to buy the group time, but the effort rapidly exhausts her. 171 181

Founder Legacies and Magical Research

Hermione becomes increasingly involved in the group’s exploration of Hogwarts’ founder legacies. She copies Gryffindor’s hidden message, solves Sir Cadogan’s trigger phrase through direct reasoning, and later helps investigate Hufflepuff’s legacy. 194 249 296

Seven Schools Tournament

Hermione’s Magical Power rises sharply in the years surrounding the Seven Schools Tournament. She competes, loses to Fleur, and initially struggles to accept the defeat; Ted’s support helps her recover her confidence. 329 360

She attends the Christmas Ball with Ted after declining Viktor Krum’s invitation, making their relationship publicly apparent. 340 341

Later Conflicts

As threats against Hogwarts escalate, Hermione evolves from an academic specialist into a battlefield leader. She coordinates wizarding defenses during the Goblin attack on Hogwarts and later stands before Voldemort, refusing to reveal Ted’s whereabouts. 427 474

During the final conflict, she channels the Demon Subduing Array’s power for large-scale magic while wearing the Diadem. 477

Trivia

  • Hermione’s birthday is September 19. 238
  • Her owl is named Magic because she chose the name to represent magic itself. 13
  • A cat hair accidentally added to Polyjuice Potion temporarily gave her a cat’s head and other feline traits. 153
  • She practices yoga after Ted gives her Yoga Lesser Vehicle, using it to improve focus, rest, and concentration. 130
