History
Founding generation
Yamamoto Genryūsai founded the Gotei 13. Its first-generation captains were battle-hardened fighters, and captaincy requirements were stricter than in later eras. Though younger than the Onmitsukidō and Kidō Corps, the organization rose to prominence through Yamamoto’s strength and the talent of its members 3 81.
Following the war against Yhwach, noble factions used Central 46’s authority to move against original members; Saito Furofushi was dismissed as 6th Division captain. Araki later concealed surviving first-generation captains in his Division 0 Detached Palace, where they trained his disciples 55 94 95.
Expansion of Araki’s influence
Kyoraku Shunsui, Ukitake Jushiro, and Tsunayashiro Tokinada defeated the captains of the 8th, 13th, and 9th Divisions before taking the captain assessment. At a subsequent meeting, Yamamoto introduced them alongside Shihoin Yoruichi as new captains of the 8th, 13th, 9th, and 2nd Divisions, respectively. All four were Araki’s disciples, strengthening the Genryu faction within the Gotei 13 114 115 118.
After Araki defeated Yamamoto, Yamamoto joined Division 0 and Araki became Captain-Commander. Araki’s tenure brought expansion of the Gotei 13, patrol posts across Rukongai, and improved conditions there. Reforms also gave division members alternating days on duty and holidays when not assigned to work 129 130 142 156.
Aizen’s command and the war with Yhwach
Aizen, Kaname Tōsen, and Ichimaru Gin’s apparent defection prompted a Level One alert. Araki assembled active and former officers, invited the Visoreds back, and revoked Central 46’s judgments against them and Kuchiki Rukia 195.
Araki later departed for the Soul King Palace and appointed Aizen Captain-Commander. Aizen reshuffled the captains and sought Kurosaki Ichigo’s temporary help against Yhwach. When Yhwach invaded Seireitei, current Gotei 13 captains and surviving first-generation members joined the fighting 218 219 220 221.
