Background / History

Kenpachi originated in Kenpachi District, where the 11th Division found him sitting atop a mountain of corpses with a broken Zanpakutō. He possessed no formal techniques or even normal communication skills, but his instinctive speed, strength, and Spiritual Pressure terrified veteran 11th Division members. Araki defeated him, giving Kenpachi his first experience of enjoyable combat and deciding to take him in as a disciple. 97 98

Araki brought him to Seireitei, where rumors spread that the boy was Araki's illegitimate son. Kenpachi's raw power was quickly demonstrated when he fought Saito Furofushi and later drew with Unohana Retsu in a wooden-sword spar. 99 101

Initially resistant to anything except fighting, Kenpachi agreed to learn reading, writing, and proper speech after Araki promised him a new sword. He learned to speak within a month, learned to write in the following month, and received a reforged Zanpakutō after three months. 101

Yamamoto subsequently trained Kenpachi in the Four Soul Reaper Arts. Kenpachi excelled at swordsmanship and Hakuda, awakened Nozarashi's Shikai after a year, and spent another decade refining his swordsmanship and Shikai. His lack of interest and talent in Kidō and Shunpo remained unchanged. 102 103

After challenging and surpassing Saito Furofushi, Kenpachi took on the 11th Division Lieutenant's duties. He then underwent harsh Bankai training at the Soul King Palace, where Division 0 forced him to overcome the fear that becoming stronger would leave him without opponents.
