Background / History

Aizen attended Shino Academy as an exceptional but isolated student, regarding the instructors and pupils around him as too ordinary and weak to be worth joining. His early ambition was to overturn Soul Society's hierarchy so that incompetent figures would relinquish power to more capable people 133 139.

After graduating, he was assigned to the 1st Division and accepted Araki as his master. Although he maintained a gentle, respectful façade, he intended to win Araki's trust, learn every technique available to him, and eventually surpass him 139. Araki subjected him to a century of punishing instruction before allowing him to transfer to the 5th Division 140 142.

Aizen rose through the 5th Division, becoming Lieutenant under Captain Shinji Hirako and later succeeding him as Captain. Shinji recognized the falseness behind Aizen's smiles from the beginning, while most others regarded Aizen as an exemplary Soul Reaper 143 156 167.

Appearance

Aizen initially presents himself as an ordinary, approachable Soul Reaper: a short brown-haired man in standard Shinigami robes, plain glasses, and a sunny smile that conceals his calculating nature 155.

Aizen possesses extreme emotional control. He rehearsed his expressions alone to preserve his mild, spring-like smile and could continue acting deferential even while privately evaluating everyone around him as beneath him 139 142. Shinji identifies the artificiality of this persona almost immediately 143.

He is intensely ambitious, self-assured, and convinced that power gives him the right to remake the world. Though he claims to seek a fairer order where talent is not wasted, he readily treats allies, enemies, and even Ichigo as tools for his plans 139 194 205. His confidence is tempered by a lasting fear of Araki, whose strength and foresight he cannot fully measure 167 206.
