Madeline Manor

Near noon, a dark yellow taxi turned onto an old dirt road. Its tires crunched over gravel, kicking up only a faint cloud of dust. Through it, towering buildings could vaguely be seen far behind them, along with the scene ahead of the taxi.

A hazy mountain stood in the distance. At its foot lay verdant valleys and plains, and at the end of a stretch of woodland, an ancient manor loomed in and out of sight.

Screech!

The taxi driver, an overweight middle-aged white man, swiftly stopped the car before a massive iron gate.

Before getting out, Tang Qi gave the driver, whose name was Lavisse, an amused glance. Though the man was extremely fat, the beads of sweat streaming down him were still excessive. His clothes were nearly soaked through, and his face was terribly pale.

After Rose Madeline got out as well, Mr. Lavisse suppressed his fear, accepted the fare from Rose, and without the slightest delay, slammed his foot on the accelerator. He kicked up a huge cloud of dust and sped away from their sight as fast as he could.
