History

Early Rivalry with Konoha

Sunagakure was established alongside Iwagakure, Kumogakure, and Kirigakure as one of the four major villages opposing Konoha’s overwhelming strength. Hashirama Senju later offered the captured tailed beasts to the other villages in pursuit of a balance of power 1128.

During the Second Great Ninja War, Hatake Sakumo invaded Sunagakure alone, destroyed its puppets, and killed numerous important figures. The village was weakened so severely that it could no longer continue fighting Konoha. It also lost several crucial battles against Konoha forces commanded by Jiraiya and suffered from Danzō’s covert operations 171 687 754.

Disappearance of the Third Kazekage

The disappearance of the Third Kazekage, celebrated as the “Strongest Kazekage,” prevented Sunagakure from sending a team to Konoha’s Chūnin Exams. Rasa succeeded him, with his ability to extract Gold Dust helping secure the position despite his comparatively weak combat strength 156 169.

After repelling Kumogakure’s first attack, Sunagakure chose to launch an all-out war against Konoha rather than counterattack the Cloud. It claimed that Konoha had abducted the Third Kazekage. Both sides suffered substantial losses in the ensuing battles, and Konoha received intelligence that Sunagakure was considering deploying tailed beasts 169.

Search Operations and Supply Crisis

When Konoha dispatched squads to find the missing Yuu, Rasa mistook their movements for preparations for a major conspiracy. Sunagakure began its own extensive search, established a blockade, and temporarily avoided fighting Konoha’s search parties. The two villages were conducting parallel searches, not cooperating 180 182 183.

Yuu’s destruction of a Sunagakure transfer camp created a temporary supply shortage. Continued Konoha offensives made kunai, shuriken, and explosive tags increasingly scarce, forcing Sunagakure to send large convoys from its homeland under jōnin escorts. One such escort was led by Hattou Hideki 200 206.

Yuu’s Invasion

After killing Hideki, Yuu used God-Tier Transformation Jutsu to copy his appearance, aura, and chakra. One Line Sky’s sensory checks failed to identify the disguise. Claiming to carry a secret Kazekage order, Yuu assembled the entrance’s thirty-five guards and killed them before entering the village 217 218.

Yuu then attacked the Kazekage’s Building, breaking its defensive barrier and nearly cutting the structure in half. The Anbu divided Sunagakure into ten search regions but failed to locate him for several hours; their captain eventually discovered that he had remained inside the damaged building 222 223 226.

With much of the village’s elite force searching elsewhere in the Land of Wind, the defenders requested reinforcements. Rasa recalled the searching forces, while Chiyo returned to confront Yuu. Her puppet assault failed to stop him, and Yuu ultimately unleashed One-Sword Style—Reaper’s Scythe, splitting Sunagakure in two 235 237 252 259.

Recorded Damage or Loss Details
Village destruction Sunagakure was reduced to ruins by the crescent-shaped slash 259 266.
Defensive perimeter One Line Sky was pierced by a gash nearly one hundred meters wide, allowing sandstorms into the village 260 261.
Opposing force The subsequent report stated that Yuu had fought more than five thousand Sand Shinobi, including Chiyo and the Anbu Captain 265.
Troop casualties Nearly three thousand ninja died; the remaining combatants were reported wounded 266.
Anbu losses The Captain and Vice-Captain died, squad leaders were nearly wiped out, and more than four-fifths of the force was lost 266.
Leadership casualties Elder Sugimoto died, other elders were seriously injured, and Chiyo was left near death 236 266.

Pakura returned with medical ninja and organized rescue operations. A temporary operating room and camp were established outside the ruined village, and survivors were pulled from the debris into the night. The reported losses exceeded those Sunagakure had suffered during the Second Great Ninja War 264 265 266.

Withdrawal and the Sand–Cloud Alliance

Sunagakure withdrew its frontline forces to the Land of Wind and temporarily left the war to repair the village. Its frontline troops remained largely intact, however, and it retained the One-Tail. Even after the invasion, it could still assemble an army exceeding ten thousand ninja 268 273 277 549.

Chiyo sought another opportunity to defeat Yuu. Kumogakure accepted Sunagakure’s alliance proposal after Yuu killed the Third Raikage. Negotiations were tense: the Fourth Raikage dismissed Rasa and questioned the usefulness of puppets against Yuu. Kumogakure offered Ebizō leadership of the joint think tank, while Sunagakure requested help retrieving the One-Tail after Yuu’s defeat 550 598 609 610.

The combined army approached thirty thousand shinobi, roughly three times Konoha’s force. Nevertheless, Konoha’s surprise night offensive destroyed all three allied defensive lines and inflicted nearly three thousand casualties. Yuu then devastated the main camp; Rasa’s collapsing Sand Sea caused further losses among the allied troops 614 621 622 624 627 628.

Chiyo ordered Pakura to deploy the One-Tail’s jinchūriki test subject, but Shukaku eventually departed with the Eight-Tails and Two-Tails. The alliance collapsed, and Rasa and other Sand Shinobi were captured. Rasa attempted to bargain with Yuu by offering exclusive wine supplied by the Land of Wind Daimyō’s Mansion; a later Sunagakure convoy carried cargo toward Konoha’s frontline camp under close supervision 636 675 683 686 733.

Konoha Vassalage

Following its defeat, Sunagakure became the major village most dependent on Konoha, effectively a vassal. Elite Konoha troops were stationed within its territory, and Rasa’s authority was constrained: he could not freely dispose of a powerful combatant such as Pakura 1046 1051 1129.

The original justification for the war was later disproved when Sasori revealed his Third Kazekage human puppet. Chiyo recognized that her grandson—not Konoha—had killed the missing leader, setting in motion the conflict that had brought Sunagakure under Konoha’s control 1121.

Before the Fourth Shinobi World War, Sunagakure joined the Allied Shinobi Forces. Rasa quickly accepted a forehead protector bearing the Saiki Family Crest, reflecting both the village’s deep dependence on Konoha and his fear of Yuu. After the war, Sunagakure joined the other three great villages in issuing declarations as the Saiki Family publicly asserted its worldwide authority 1131 1132 1298.

Geography and Landmarks

  • Desert setting — Sunagakure lies within the Land of Wind. Its shinobi wear headscarves for protection against harsh, cutting winds and sand 204 207.
  • Encircling rock walls — Earth-colored walls hundreds of meters tall surround the village and shield it from sandstorms 216.
  • One Line Sky — The single gap in the surrounding barrier serves as the village entrance and is celebrated as its “Absolute Defense.” Open and concealed sentries, binocular surveillance, and sensory checks protect the approach 216 217.
  • Kazekage’s Building — The seat of Sunagakure’s highest authority, distinguished by a large “Wind” character. It also serves as a symbol of the village and houses a substantial Anbu garrison 219 223.

Military Capabilities

Puppetry and Poison

  • Puppet Masters are a major source of Sunagakure’s military strength, helping compensate for its smaller shinobi population 169 252.
  • Their arsenal includes poisoned concealed weapons, chakra blades, controlling chakra threads, and powerful physical strikes 252.
  • Puppets assembled from separate components can be reassembled after being scattered by ordinary ninjutsu. Concentrated sword attacks are more dangerous because they can destroy crucial components outright 252.
  • Puppet Masters’ comparatively fragile bodies remain a vulnerability; Chiyo was forced to evade Yuu’s slash rather than withstand it 253.
  • Puppet poisons are troublesome enough that Konoha specifically prepares Tsunade to counter them 170.

Wind Release

  • Wind Release is a prominent Sand Shinobi combat specialty. The Anbu Captain uses Crushing Pressure and a Wind Blade considered sharper than conventional ninja swords 228 229.
  • Konoha identifies Uchiha Fire Release as an effective counter to Sunagakure’s Wind Release 284.

Defensive Techniques

  • Sand Shinobi use Earth Flow Walls to delay attacks while stronger defenses are prepared 222.
  • Red Sand Great Burial is a barrier formed by four Anbu positioned around the Kazekage’s Building. Despite its squad captain’s confidence, Yuu breaks through it 222 223.
  • One Line Sky’s identity checks can be defeated by a transformation that reproduces chakra as well as appearance 217 218.

The One-Tail

  • Shukaku serves as Sunagakure’s major battlefield weapon and becomes its strongest remaining war asset after the Third Kazekage’s disappearance and Chiyo’s injuries 675.
  • Its destructive potential is especially dangerous in the desert. After Yuu’s first invasion, Konoha avoids recklessly attacking Sunagakure’s homeland because the village still possesses it 273.
  • Shukaku is subsequently seized by Yuu and brought to Konoha, depriving Sunagakure of the weapon it had relied upon 739 818.

Notable Members

  • Third Kazekage — Former leader hailed as the “Strongest Kazekage.” His disappearance triggers the war; Sasori is later revealed to have killed him and made him into a human puppet 156 1121.
  • Rasa — Fourth Kazekage. His Gold Dust extraction helps secure his appointment; he commands Sunagakure during the war and later accepts its subordinate position under Konoha 169 1132.
  • Chiyo — Elder, leading Puppet Master, and Sunagakure’s second-in-command. She confronts Yuu, survives critical injuries, and advocates renewed resistance through the Cloud alliance 252 264 550.
  • Ebizō — Influential elder and Chiyo’s younger brother. Renowned for his strategic record, he becomes chief strategist of the Sand–Cloud Allied Forces 198 665.
  • Pakura — Leads rescue operations after the village’s destruction. She survives into the later era with combat power comparable to a Kage, while Sunagakure’s vassal status limits Rasa’s ability to act against her 265 1051.
  • Sand Anbu Captain — Known as Sunagakure’s “sharpest sword,” a Kage-level fighter ranked among its five strongest combatants. He dies during Yuu’s invasion 230 265.
  • Sasori — Chiyo’s grandson and an exceptionally talented Puppet Master. His murder of the Third Kazekage is ultimately exposed as the cause behind Sunagakure’s disastrous entry into the war 1107 1121.
  • Hattou Hideki — Jōnin supply-convoy commander whose identity Yuu steals to infiltrate the village 206 217.

Foreign Relations

  • Konoha — A wartime enemy that later becomes Sunagakure’s dominant power, maintaining garrisons in its territory and drawing it into the Allied Shinobi Forces 169 1046 1131.
  • Saiki Yuu — Personally destroys Sunagakure’s stronghold, cripples its Anbu, defeats its renewed alliance, and becomes the authority its leadership fears most 266 818 1132.
  • Kumogakure — Initially attacks Sunagakure, then allies with it against Yuu. The alliance depends heavily on the One-Tail and is marked by friction over Sunagakure’s strength and leadership 169 598 609 610.
  • Land of Wind Daimyō’s Mansion — Supplies Sunagakure with exclusive wine, which Rasa offers during negotiations with Yuu 683.
