|---|---|---|
| Enhanced chakra and physique | 1050, 1058 | Years of being beaten to the brink of death by Yuu and restored through the Power of All Creation substantially strengthened Jiraiya’s chakra and physique. Jiraiya considers this growth far faster than ordinary cultivation. 1050 1058 |
Background / History
A disciple of Hiruzen Sarutobi, Jiraiya fought beside Tsunade and Orochimaru during the Second Great Ninja War. After their confrontation with Hanzō of Amegakure, Hanzō spared the trio and granted them the title of Konoha’s Legendary Sannin. 1055
During the war in the Land of Rain, Jiraiya took in Yahiko, Nagato, and Konan. Nagato’s Rinnegan and mastery of all five chakra natures convinced Jiraiya that he might be the Child of Prophecy mentioned by the Great Toad Sage. Jiraiya trained the three orphans before returning to Konoha when the war demanded it. 1055
Jiraiya later trained Minato Namikaze. Hiruzen cited Minato’s success as proof that Jiraiya could mentor exceptional students, assigning Saiki Yuu to Jiraiya despite Jiraiya’s reluctance and lack of swordsmanship knowledge. 108
Appearance
Jiraiya is a white-haired man with two tear-like markings beneath his eyes. 42
- Long white hair, which he can weaponize through hair-based ninjutsu. 1057 1059
- Distinctive markings running beneath both eyes. 42
- Often wears the forehead paint associated with his Mount Myōboku identity; Minato notes it remains visible after Jiraiya’s return from travel. 1055
Personality
Jiraiya is boastful, theatrical, and deeply protective of his reputation as a Sannin and the Sage of Mount Myōboku. He enjoys the prestige earned through battlefield victories and reacts badly when Naruto or Yuu dismisses his strength. 542 983 His pride often makes him deny obvious humiliation, even when Minato finds his stubbornness amusing. 306
He is also impulsive, fond of alcohol, and frequently irresponsible in everyday matters. He spends his earnings as quickly as he receives them, covets rare sake, and seeks writing material for his books rather than maintaining a stable home. 764 1004 His fondness for inappropriate humor earns him Naruto’s “Pervy Sage” nickname. 1055
Beneath this immaturity, Jiraiya possesses a strong sense of duty. He accepts responsibility for Yuu after losing him during their first journey, leads Konoha forces during wartime, and investigates Akatsuki alone because its leaders may be the students he failed to protect. 134 180 542 1056 Even while severely injured in Amegakure, he chooses to continue gathering intelligence rather than retreat. 1059

Toad Shadow Manipulation Technique
Jiraiya can conceal himself in another person’s shadow and control their movements.
- Infiltrated Amegakure by merging into an ordinary ninja’s shadow. 1056
- The technique allowed him to observe Amegakure while disguising his own presence. 1056
- Konan detected the infiltration, forcing him into open combat. 1056
Hair Techniques
Jiraiya turns his hair into binding, striking, and piercing weapons.
- Lion Combo Technique — binds targets with whip-like white hair; he immobilized Konan after soaking her in toad oil. 1057
- Needle Jizo — hardens and launches his hair as needle-like projectiles. 1059
- Used his hair to move heavy rubble during a rescue effort. 668
- The Six Paths of Pain’s shared vision enabled the Asura Path to evade Needle Jizo. 1059
Fire Release and Toad Oil Techniques
Jiraiya combines fire-based ninjutsu with toad oil to counter opponents and control the battlefield.
- Flame Bullet — expelled a large fireball that incinerated Konan’s paper attack. 1056
- Toad Oil Bomb — drenched Konan in toad oil, preventing her from using her Paper Clone Technique. 1057
- Female Bath Bomb Kill — unleashed a large volume of flames against Nagato’s forces. 1058
- Used Fire Release for practical field tasks, including starting fires for Yuu’s camp. 285

Story Role / Major Arcs
Yuu’s Reluctant Mentor
After Hiruzen assigns Yuu to him, Jiraiya becomes responsible for guiding a powerful, foul-mouthed genin he can barely control. During a search for Tsunade, Yuu tries to sell Jiraiya’s summoned toads for alcohol; their dispute ends with Jiraiya fleeing ahead, only to panic when Yuu goes missing. 108 134
Jiraiya’s mistake prompts a Konoha search operation involving numerous squads, drawing Sunagakure’s attention during a tense period at the border. 180 His inability to keep Yuu under control becomes a recurring embarrassment acknowledged by Tsunade and other Konoha shinobi. 311
Third Shinobi World War
Jiraiya participates in Konoha’s wartime operations and returns from the Sand front with Konoha elites. He is later deputy commander on the Kumogakure front, leading precision assaults while Orochimaru remains at the main camp as overall commander. 284 542
When Yuu arrives at the Cloud Battlefield, Jiraiya and Orochimaru are forced to confront the Third Raikage. Yuu intervenes to save them, then establishes a daily sparring arrangement that leaves Jiraiya severely beaten but determined to improve. 573 590 591
Mount Myōboku Visit
Jiraiya offers to take Yuu to Mount Myōboku after learning of Yuu’s interest in Sage Mode, then immediately regrets mentioning the Great Toad Sage when Yuu expresses interest in “chopping” him. 1007 1008
Threatened with losing his legs, Jiraiya agrees to guide Yuu to Mount Myōboku. He endures Shima’s cooking, tries to protect the Great Toad Sage from Yuu, and ultimately carries Yuu’s acquired wine and treasures after the visit. 1011 1016 1022 1027
Akatsuki Investigation and the Six Paths of Pain
Suspecting that his former Rain orphans lead Akatsuki, Jiraiya leaves Konoha alone to investigate Amegakure. He infiltrates the village through Toad Shadow Manipulation, battles Konan, and confirms that Nagato, Konan, and Yahiko are connected to Akatsuki’s leadership. 1055 1056 1057
The Six Paths of Pain overwhelm him, but Jiraiya gathers vital intelligence on their linked vision and distinct bodies. Refusing to retreat, he entrusts his corpse and information to Fukasaku and Shima before reengaging the Pains in Sage Mode. 1058 1059
Naruto saves Jiraiya from a fatal attack, after which Yuu arrives and extracts the residual Rinnegan power from Jiraiya’s body. Yuu kills Jiraiya as punishment for acting alone, then restores him completely through Rinne Rebirth. 1059 1061 1062
Defense of Konoha and the Fourth Great Ninja War
Jiraiya briefs Konoha’s jōnin on Akatsuki and later fights beside Orochimaru against Nagato’s strengthened Six Paths of Pain during the attack on Konoha. 1091 1113
During the Fourth Great Ninja War, he and Orochimaru inspire Allied Forces shinobi to charge toward the Divine Tree, though Tsunade recognizes that Hiruzen is using Yuu’s name to push them into overexerting themselves. 1240
