Background / History
Phil grew up in Linshui City's southern-district slums with his older sister, Alice. Their mother died a few years after Phil's birth, and their father—a Garrison soldier—was later killed in action. After becoming orphaned, Phil trained according to his father's teachings and resolved to become a soldier who could kill bandits like the ones responsible for his father's death. 28 29 36
He became the leader of a small group of more than a dozen slum youths, many of them orphans whom he had helped and sheltered. When Boar Bill extorted the group and threatened Alice, Phil became involved in theft. 29 32
Sean Winchester arrested Phil after Amy accused him of theft, but Sean's perception revealed Phil's exceptional natural physique. After investigating Phil's circumstances and learning of Boar Bill's coercion, Sean offered the siblings a chance to become his noble servants. Phil accepted and pledged his loyalty. 28 29 30 137
Story Role / Major Arcs
Recruitment and service under Sean
Phil joined Sean's household alongside Alice and four other youths from the slums. Sean entrusted him with discreetly procuring perfume ingredients, a task Phil handled without attracting notice; he also acted as a leader among the new servants. 32
When Sean prepared to join a bandit-suppression campaign, Phil volunteered to accompany him rather than remain a servant indefinitely. Sean equipped him with Soldier's Leather Armor and treated the campaign as a test of Phil's ability and loyalty. 36
Phil served Sean throughout the campaign, performing household duties, searching captured bandit strongholds, assisting Vinson, and following Sean's operational orders. 43 48 71 89
Knight Squire
Following the campaign, Sean formally promoted Phil to Knight Squire, though the full witnessing ceremony was deferred until their return to the Winchester territory. 50 Sean later explained to Viscount Winchester that Phil's exceptional knightly talent, shrewdness, and loyalty made him worthy of the appointment. 104
Phil's formal Knight Squire ceremony was held on New Year's Day. Numerous local figures attended after Sean's status as a Formal Knight became known. 105
Before leaving Linshui City, Phil bid farewell to his former gang and entrusted its leadership to Daniel. He also reprimanded Peter for boasting about Sean and Phil's status, recognizing that careless talk about nobles could create problems for Sean. 112
Northern and territorial service
Phil continued serving as one of Sean's trusted squires and was tasked with supervising Blacksmith Tack during their stay in Star Luo City, specifically to prevent Tack from boasting irresponsibly. 115
By the time Sean returned south from the Northern Lands, Phil had reached Rookie Knight. Sean considered both Phil's status as a Knight Squire and his shrewd temperament sufficient grounds to leave him behind for an important role. 225
Phil later took responsibility for training and managing Sean's sea ships. He adapted well to the position, enjoyed the work, and earned Sean's praise for his performance. 260
Personality
Phil is ambitious and determined to escape the limitations of his origin. His childhood goal of becoming a soldier survived his father's death and drove him to seize Sean's offer of training, service, and advancement. 36
He is intensely devoted to Alice and initially reacted with fury when he misunderstood Sean's relationship with her. Once he understood the circumstances, he accepted Sean's protection of Alice and saw it as security for both their futures. 29 36
Sean regards Phil as shrewd and loyal. Phil demonstrates those traits through careful procurement work, leadership over the slum youths, restraint around noble matters, and reliable execution of orders. 32 104 112
