The Ghost Squad's White Impermanences spread out to search the area, while the Gargoyles seemed to know where the enemy was and pounced straight in that direction.

The two different search methods quickly uncovered something unusual.

"So you're saying these stone-like things were the enemies that attacked me earlier? How is that possible? As a Necromancer, I can still tell life from non-life.

"It's obvious at a glance that these are the most ordinary stones. How could they have been what attacked me just now?"

Yet the Gargoyles that had brought the things over were utterly certain. Gu Xi picked up one of the stones and began examining it.

As he tapped it, Gu Xi discovered that these fist-sized stones were actually artificial creations.

They looked as though they had been cast from cement. When he smashed one apart, he found a thumb-sized gem and a length of rebar as long as an index finger inside.

If only one of them were like this, it might not mean much.

But every single one was the same, which changed things.
