Bayam still retained a fair amount of light at night, but it was concentrated in the Market District. The other districts weren't extravagant enough to line every alley with gas lamps.
In the dim Docklands, Alger, the Hanged Man, sat in a second-floor hotel suite with both hands on the table. One held the Magician Pocket Watch, the other a cutlass. His eyes remained fixed on the gas lamp on the wall, his body motionless.
Suddenly, ripples spread across the glass window behind him, and a figure appeared directly inside the room.
Alger's brows furrowed slightly, as though he had sensed movement behind him. He abruptly turned toward the window, only to find it shut tight, with no second person in the room.
But a second later, the Empress emerged from invisibility right in front of him, wearing a hooded cloak over a long dress.
Alger's pupils contracted sharply, and he nearly pressed the pocket watch to flash out of the room. Fortunately, his resolve was firm. Once he recognized the visitor, he refrained from acting rashly. Instead, he nodded as though he had noticed her long ago and said,
"You're ten minutes early."
That's because this trip through the Mirror World went relatively smoothly. I didn't fall into the Spirit World or run into any strange creatures...
