Background
Tang San retains memories of two lifetimes as a former Tang Sect disciple. After arriving in Douluo Continent, he resolves to preserve the Tang Sect’s techniques and hidden weapons, eventually seeking to establish the sect’s glory in this new world 100 101.
As a young child in Holy Soul Village, Tang San is thin, malnourished, and dressed in patched linen. He rises at dawn to cultivate the Mysterious Heaven Skill, Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track, and Purple Demon Eye while living with his father, Tang Hao 99. His relationship with Tang Hao is tense; Tang San fears punishment for neglected chores and does not initially know that his father is the Clear Sky Douluo 99 104.
Luo Chen directs Tang San toward the weakened Blue Silver Emperor, Ah Yin. Tang San unintentionally absorbs its power through the Mysterious Heaven Skill, temporarily gaining a Blue Silver Emperor aura and a healthier appearance. Luo Chen secretly seals the growing bloodline power, then later extracts it completely during Tang San’s martial-soul awakening 103 112 113.
Tang San awakens Twin Martial Souls—ordinary Blue Silver Grass and the Clear Sky Hammer—and possesses Innate Full Soul Power. He conceals the Clear Sky Hammer, becoming increasingly suspicious of Luo Chen after recognizing that the Palace Master knows more about him than he should 113.
At Nuoding Academy, Luo Chen arranges for Xiao Chenyu to brutally defeat Tang San and later places a hidden green light in his body that drains his Life Force. Tang San nevertheless recovers and studies in Luo Chen’s class, initially believing Luo Chen’s guidance may help him become powerful 124 126 129.
Tang San and Yu Xiaogang hunt the Man-eating Vine Snake for his first Soul Ring. He kills the beast after Yu Xiaogang is poisoned, saves his teacher with the Mysterious Heaven Skill, and begins absorbing the ring. Luo Chen covertly downgrades it into a ten-year ring, severely limiting Tang San’s early development and creating doubt between student and teacher 135 139.
Six years later, Tang San graduates from Nuoding Academy at Level 25 and travels with Xiao Wu to Shrek Academy. Despite his two white Soul Rings, he is admitted after Xiao Wu threatens to leave if he is rejected 176 177.
Appearance
Tang San’s appearance changes repeatedly as Luo Chen interferes with his Blue Silver Emperor bloodline.
- Initially a frail, stick-thin three-year-old in ragged, patched linen clothing 99.
- After absorbing Blue Silver Emperor power, his hair becomes pale blue; he grows more handsome and carries a gentle life aura 103.
- Luo Chen’s extraction of the bloodline leaves him frail, pale, and visibly drained of vitality during his awakening 113.
- Six years later, he is described as an ordinary-looking youth wearing blue clothing 176.
Personality
Tang San is highly vigilant and mature beyond his age, shaped by memories of two lifetimes. He immediately distrusts Luo Chen’s stated motives, attempts to escape when restrained, and considers whether Luo Chen is trying to expose his origins or cultivation method 100 101.
He is proud, determined, and unwilling to accept defeat. After Xiao Chenyu overwhelms him, he forces himself back into the fight rather than yielding; after discovering his ten-year first ring, he becomes determined to compensate through further growth and his hidden Clear Sky Hammer 125 180.
Tang San is also protective of those he considers important. He risks himself to aid Luosanpao, fights the Man-eating Vine Snake after Yu Xiaogang is poisoned, and uses the Mysterious Heaven Skill to suppress the venom in his teacher’s body 135 136.
Abilities & Skills
Twin Martial Souls
Tang San possesses two Martial Souls: Blue Silver Grass in his right hand and the Clear Sky Hammer in his left. Luo Chen removes the Blue Silver Emperor bloodline before the awakening, leaving his Blue Silver Grass ordinary despite its original potential 112 113.
- Blue Silver Grass — A plant Martial Soul that develops from a sprout into a tougher vine after absorbing its first ring 138.
- Clear Sky Hammer — A second Martial Soul with an aura of violent destruction; Tang San keeps it hidden from others 112 113.
- Innate Full Soul Power — His Soul Power tests at the maximum innate level despite the loss of his Blue Silver Emperor bloodline 113.
- Limitation — His first two Soul Rings are white, ten-year rings, drastically reducing the strength and development value of his early soul skills 137 176 177.
First Soul Skill: Entangling
Tang San’s first Blue Silver Grass skill produces vines that bind targets and terrain 138.
- Binds trees with multiple extending vines.
- Leaves faintly toxic, charred corrosion where the vines make contact 138 139.
- Classified by Yu Xiaogang as a Control System skill 139.
- Its restraining force and toxicity are weak because its ring is only ten years old 138 139.
Mysterious Heaven Skill
A Tang Sect inner cultivation technique that produces qi-like inner power and reinforces Tang San’s body 99.
- Nourishes his meridians, relieves fatigue, and strengthens his physique 99.
- Accelerates while exposed to Blue Silver Emperor power 103.
- Helps suppress toxins from the Man-eating Vine Snake and temporarily suppresses Yu Xiaogang’s poisoning 136.
- Cannot withstand Luo Chen’s overwhelming Soul Power during Tang San’s martial-soul awakening 112.
Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track
A body-lightening footwork technique that creates afterimages and makes Tang San difficult to pin down 99.
- Allows evasive movement against Xiao Chenyu’s initial ambush at the Seventh Dormitory 124.
- Lets him circle and evade the Man-eating Vine Snake during combat 135.
- Is insufficient against opponents with vastly superior Soul Power or speed, including Luo Chen and Xiao Chenyu 99 124.
Purple Demon Eye
An eye-training technique cultivated with purple qi at dawn. Its four realms are All-Seeing, Subtle, Mustard Seed, and Vastness 99.
- Enhances perception enough to detect the Blue Silver Emperor’s aura in a hidden cave 102.
- Allows Tang San to see clearly in darkness 103.
- His spiritual power before awakening is comparable to that of a one-ring Soul Master 99.
- Cannot pierce Luo Chen’s Space Power disguise or detect his concealed presence 102 111.
Mysterious Jade Hand
A Tang Sect hand technique that turns Tang San’s hands jade-like, hardens them, and protects them from poison 112.
- Used alongside poison-related techniques.
- Allows him to strike the Man-eating Vine Snake and pry open its jaws 135.
- Withstands Xiao Chenyu’s Soul Power strike well enough to force the stronger student half a step backward 125.
- Does not compensate for Tang San’s large gap in Soul Power against stronger opponents 124 125.
Hidden Weapons
Tang San retains the hidden-weapon methods of the Tang Sect and uses metal projectiles in combat 100 181.
- Fires multiple concealed weapons at Luo Chen during Shrek Academy’s assessment 181.
- His weapons can threaten ordinary people but are effortlessly destroyed by Luo Chen’s Soul Power 181.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Dagger — Used against the Man-eating Vine Snake, though it cannot cut through the beast’s scales 135.
- Tang Sect hidden weapons — Metal projectiles launched from his sleeves 181.
- Yu Xiaogang’s recommendation letter — Helps secure his admission to Shrek Academy despite his white Soul Rings 177.
Relationships
- Tang Hao — Father. Their relationship is strained by Tang San’s ignorance of Ah Yin’s identity and Tang Hao’s violent reaction to the withered Blue Silver Emperor; Tang Hao is later killed by Luo Chen 104 184.
- Ah Yin / Blue Silver Emperor — Mother. Tang San unknowingly absorbs her remaining Blue Silver Emperor power, leaving her as ordinary, withered Blue Silver Grass 103 104.
- Luo Chen — Manipulator and former Nuoding Academy teacher. Luo Chen directs Tang San to Ah Yin, extracts his Blue Silver Emperor bloodline, engineers his weak Soul Rings, and repeatedly obstructs his growth 101 112 137 184.
- Yu Xiaogang — Teacher and mentor. Tang San trusts his judgment, fights beside him in Soul Hunting Forest, and saves him from venom; the first-ring incident later creates a growing rift between them 130 135 139 176.
- Xiao Wu — Friend and fellow Shrek applicant. She supports Tang San’s admission by threatening to leave if Shrek rejects him, though she has secretly created obstacles for him under Luo Chen’s orders 176 177.
- Xiao Chenyu — Seventh Dormitory leader who attacks and severely injures Tang San under Luo Chen’s prior instruction 124 126.
- Old Jack — Holy Soul Village chief who is delighted to learn that Tang San has Innate Full Soul Power 113.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Holy Soul Village and the Blue Silver Emperor
Tang San’s path is targeted before his martial-soul awakening. Luo Chen approaches him under the guise of guidance, exploits his wish for strength, and leads him to the Blue Silver Emperor. Tang San absorbs its power, while Luo Chen seals the bloodline’s evolution and allows Tang Hao to misunderstand what happened to Ah Yin 99 105.
Martial Soul Awakening
Luo Chen personally conducts Tang San’s awakening rather than allowing Su Yuntao to do so. He extracts the Blue Silver Emperor bloodline, but Tang San still reveals Innate Full Soul Power and a second Martial Soul, the Clear Sky Hammer 112 113.
Nuoding Academy
Tang San enters the Seventh Dormitory and is deliberately crushed by Xiao Chenyu. Though badly injured, he recovers and enters Luo Chen’s class, unaware that Luo Chen has placed a Life Force-draining light in his body 124 129.
First Soul Ring
Tang San and Yu Xiaogang face the Man-eating Vine Snake in Soul Hunting Forest. Tang San kills it and begins absorbing its century-old ring, only for Luo Chen to secretly reduce it to a ten-year ring. The weak result damages Tang San’s confidence and trust in Yu Xiaogang 134 139.
Shrek Academy
After six years of slowed development, Tang San reaches Level 25 with two white Soul Rings and applies to Shrek Academy alongside Xiao Wu. He joins despite the academy’s objections, then recognizes Teacher Luo as Luo Chen and is once again overwhelmed during the academy’s assessment 176 181.
Loss of Tang Hao and Future Setbacks
Tang San feels sudden pain when Luo Chen kills Tang Hao, leaving him without his father’s protection 184 185. Luo Chen later destroys Slaughter City and seizes the Asura Demonic Sword, reducing Tang San’s future chance of inheriting the Asura God’s divine position 229.
