Background / Nature

A Zanpakuto is born from a Soul Reaper's soul and serves as the tangible manifestation and conceptualization of that Soul Reaper's power. Its form, strength, personality, and abilities are shaped not only by the wielder's spiritual body, but also by their will, thoughts, and emotions. Consequently, even close relatives cannot possess completely identical Zanpakuto 27 43.

Aizen Sōsuke describes the Zanpakuto as the form taken by the chain once carried by a Plus, making it the outward expression of a Soul Reaper's power 147. Unohana Retsu notes that an Asauchi is not strictly required for a person to awaken a Zanpakuto; Rukongai residents may theoretically possess Zanpakuto-representing powers as well 43.

The novel also establishes Asauchi as vessels forged to reflect a wielder's heart. Over time, the wielder's heart becomes the blade's soul, forming a Zanpakuto suited to them 820 832.

Appearance

Zanpakuto ordinarily appear as bladed weapons, but their released forms and sword spirits vary greatly according to their wielders' souls.

• Sealed forms are commonly swords; their hardness and density are generally tied to the wielder's spiritual pressure 804.

Forms and Development

Shikai

Shikai is a Zanpakuto's initial released state. Its ability may be activated through a release command, although Soul Reapers who have mastered Bankai can directly activate Shikai without one 42.

Shikai abilities are not necessarily purely offensive. All Things in Nature's Shikai spreads grass over a wide area, absorbs ambient Reishi to create trees, repairs spiritual bodies, and strengthens its environment 84 85.

Bankai

Bankai is achieved by making the sword spirit submit to its Soul Reaper. A Tenshintai can forcibly materialize a sword spirit and accelerate this process 461.

Most Bankai are enhanced versions of their Shikai, retaining the same fundamental nature at far greater power. Others undergo a drastic mutation that can cross classification boundaries; Suzumebachi changes from a Bakudō-type Shikai to the Projectile-type Jakuhō Raikōben 27.

• A Bankai may reflect a wielder's changing desires or emotional development rather than a fixed, predetermined ability 27 43.

A sword spirit's temporary departure does not destroy the Zanpakuto itself; it chiefly prevents or disrupts the wielder's ability to release it. If that consciousness is lost, another may slowly form in its place 206.
