Background / History

Aizen originated in Rukongai, where his extraordinary Reiatsu and talent separated him from the residents around him. He regarded their struggle to survive as incomprehensible and came to see himself as fundamentally unable to resonate with ordinary souls. This isolation developed into a profound loneliness and conviction that he stood above the people around him. 729

While serving as Fifth Division Vice-Captain, Aizen maintained a reputation for humility, gentleness, and concern for subordinates. He approached Chiba Makoto with a request for a technique that could remove a Shinigami's power without destroying the Saketsu, presenting the request as an attempt to help a Fifth Division member leave the Gotei 13 safely. Makoto saw through the performance and concluded that Aizen was pursuing power-stripping for an undisclosed purpose. 26

Aizen found Soul Society stiflingly dull, dismissing most Captain-class Shinigami as beings he could kill in one or two strikes. Learning of the Zero Division and the Soul King Palace gave him a new objective: transcend Shinigami limits and reach the palace as a ruler rather than through promotion. 94

His interest in Makoto began after he encountered him in Rukongai and could not sense his Reiatsu. Aizen secretly collected Makoto's residual blood and determined that Makoto was neither a deceased human soul transformed into a Shinigami nor a Hollow.
