History
Yachiru, the First Kenpachi
Unohana originally lived as a killer who found meaning only in fighting and bloodshed. After mastering Soul Society’s Kendo schools, she was bestowed the name Yachiru, becoming the First Kenpachi and an object of fear among nobles and swordsmen alike 7 128.
Her first defeat came at the hands of Yamamoto Genryūsai Shigekuni, whose overwhelming hellfire defeated her despite her swordsmanship. She subsequently joined the Gotei 13 and became associated with the Fourth Division during its conflict with the Sternritter 128.
At some point, she fought a young Zaraki Kenpachi in Rukongai. Though she defeated him, he left a scar on her chest and gave her hope that he might one day become an opponent capable of satisfying her craving for battle. Unohana restrained her blade and waited for his growth 591.
Fourth Division Captain
For nearly a millennium, Unohana presented herself as the gentle Captain of the Fourth Division. Shin'ō Academy texts recognized her long service, vast record of treatment, and achievements in Kaidō and medical skills, while concealing her history as the First Kenpachi 6.
She accepted Chiba Makoto as her disciple after observing his dedication to Kaidō and healing. Unohana immediately recognized the broader potential of his healing Zanpakutō, including Reishi absorption, binding, and sustained self-recovery, and offered to personally teach him Zanjutsu should he awaken Bankai 12 15.
Hollowfication Crisis
When several Captains became Hollowfied, Unohana’s suppressed killing intent erupted. She drew her sword for the first time in a millennium, killed the Hollowfied Love Aikawa with a single strike, and confronted the remaining Hollowfied Captains without releasing her Shikai 126 127.
Her battle with Makoto within Minazuki brought her killing state close to complete loss of control. Even so, she deliberately avoided his vital points, and Makoto’s intervention allowed her to regain herself and leave Minazuki with him alive 129 136 137.
After a month away from the Fourth Division, she returned expecting fear from her subordinates. Instead, the division welcomed her with Utsugi Flowers, a ceremony, and a banquet arranged by Makoto 172.
Later Conflicts and Command
Unohana clashed with Yoruichi Shihōin during the Zanpakutō rebellion, displaying enough speed and precision to wound Yoruichi through Utsusemi. When Minazuki materialized and attempted to provoke her into returning fully to Yachiru, Unohana destroyed it with her secret art 473 482.
During the defense of Karakura Town, she accepted command of the operation against Aizen and the Arrancar. She brought Makoto’s body with her because his presence was the means by which she could maintain control in her full combat state 577.
Her subsequent public battle with Makoto proved that she could stop herself even at the height of combat. This display transformed the Gotei 13’s perception of her from a feared healer into a reliable frontline leader 594 595 596.
Unohana later repelled NO.0, faced Aizen directly, and became a rallying point for the Shinigami during Seireitei’s collapse 695 699. Yamamoto appointed her Acting Captain-Commander to restore order, then formally resigned and recommended her as his successor; the Captains unanimously approved her appointment 708 712.
Appearance
Unohana is a beautiful, composed woman whose gentle presentation conceals an exceptionally dangerous presence. Her usual appearance is deliberately restrained and formal, sharply contrasting the blood-colored Reiatsu and loose hair that accompany her killing state 6 126.
- Wears a white Fourth Division Captain’s haori bearing the character for “Four” 6.
- Has long black hair, typically braided over her chest 6.
- Conceals a scar beneath her collarbone with her braid and uniform 136.
- Her hair comes loose and her Reiatsu takes on a blood-red quality when she enters a combat state 126 474.
- Her killing intent is associated with the image of blooming blood-red Utsugi flowers 814.
Personality
Unohana is outwardly gentle, patient, and dignified. She is attentive to the needs of patients and subordinates, encourages younger Shinigami, and treats Makoto’s healing potential with genuine interest rather than contempt 15 19.
Beneath that composure is Yachiru’s deeply rooted desire for battle and slaughter. Strong opponents and sustained swordplay can awaken an exhilarated, merciless side of her that regards combat as pleasure 127 594.
She is highly strategic and politically aware. She understands the Gotei 13’s institutional structure, considers Aizen’s capabilities carefully, and quietly cultivated influence through the Shinigami Women’s Association before her eventual rise to Captain-Commander 175 574.
Makoto became the central restraint on her destructive instincts. Her attachment to him motivates her to preserve her sanity in battle, but also makes threats to him, his remains, or his memory a personal taboo 595 608 447.
Abilities & Skills
Kendo Mastery
Unohana is the foremost swordswoman of her era, having mastered every Kendo school in Soul Society. Her style unifies innumerable techniques into a single, fluid fighting method that overwhelms opponents before they can read her movements 7 135.
- Defeated the Hollowfied Love Aikawa with an unreleased Zanpakutō and a single casual swing 127.
- Can wield concealed secondary blades, using them to strike from unexpected angles 473.
- Her swordsmanship forced Aizen Sōsuke onto the defensive despite his greater Reiatsu 699.
- Her signature technique, Moonfall, split Lille Barro’s soul and dispersed him into Reishi 817.
- Her killing state was historically dangerous to allies as well as enemies when left uncontrolled 591.
Kaidō and Medical Skills
Unohana is regarded as Soul Society’s greatest Kaidō and medical specialist. Her knowledge of spiritual-body structure gives her precise control over both treatment and injury 6 126.
- Deliberately wounded Makoto without striking vital points, even while in an unstable combat state 129.
- Can rapidly heal herself inside Minazuki, restoring grave wounds almost instantly while her Reiatsu remains available 815.
- Treated Yoruichi after extensive spinal and internal-organ damage, though she acknowledged the immediate limits of Kaidō in recreating lost spinal bone 625 626.
- Passed medical knowledge and practical opportunities to Makoto and other Fourth Division members 15 19.
Bankai: Minazuki
Minazuki creates a blood-red enclosed combat space. Within it, Reishi activity and instincts are heightened, wounds heal at extraordinary speed, and participants are driven toward more aggressive combat 129 131 585.
- Restricts an opponent’s ability to escape the enclosed space 585.
- Enhances Unohana’s physical condition, instinctive reactions, and recovery capacity 585 815.
- Intensifies her urge to fight, making emotional restraint a necessary limitation 130 137.
- Can be dispersed when Unohana sheathes Minazuki 136.
Combat Instincts and Perception
Unohana’s instincts allow her to react to minute changes in an opponent’s intent and movements, even in chaotic conditions 663.
- Located Yūke Terasiru by sensing a fleeting gaze filled with anger and killing intent 663.
- Dodged Lille Barro’s interwoven Reishi pillars without visually tracking each trajectory 815.
- Her instincts, amplified through Minazuki, were a major reason she could master countless Kendo styles as Yachiru 815.
- Her heightened combat perception allowed her to perceive through illusions during her battle with Lille Barro 817.
Shunpo
Unohana possesses top-tier Shunpo and can pursue or outmaneuver even Yoruichi under unfavorable conditions 473 608.
- Pursued Yoruichi through the forests of Seireitei and struck her despite Utsusemi 473.
- Drove Black Cat Yoruichi toward Karakura Town’s outskirts while maintaining controlled pressure and avoiding harm to civilians 608.
