Background / History
The Sun Moon Empire originated from the Sun Moon Continent and fought the Douluo Three Empires after the two continents collided. In the early Sun Moon War, the Three Empires suffered repeated defeats until Shrek Academy's president united their forces; nearly sixty Titled Douluo answered the call, ultimately ending the conflict around four thousand years before the main story 25.
Its Soul Tool industry was built on ten thousand years of accumulated technical paths, abundant Rare Metal reserves, and a large Soul Engineer workforce. These advantages let it manufacture Soul Tools at lower material and labor costs than the Douluo Three Empires, whose researchers commonly treated exported Sun Moon techniques as already perfected standards rather than subjects for further optimization 163.
By the time of Huo Yuhao's studies, Sun Moon technology remained generations ahead in many fields. Five-hundred-year-old techniques from the empire could still exceed what most contemporary Rank Seven Soul Tool Creators in the Three Empires had mastered, while its standard experimental workbenches surpassed Shrek's by at least two technological generations 64 446.
Xu Tianran's Rise
As the former emperor declined from illness, Crown Prince Xu Tianran seized control of the imperial power core with support from the Holy Spirit Cult. He publicly adopted the title of Regent, a move that pressured every court faction to choose a side, before ascending as emperor 532 635 636.
Xu Tianran viewed war as the route to continental unification and social advancement through military merit. His rule accelerated the empire's militarization, Rare Metal export restrictions, conscription, and deployment of Soul Engineer forces along the borders 627 773.
Continental War
The empire launched its war ahead of schedule after learning that the Three Empires were rapidly building standardized Soul Engineer Regiments. Six Ninth Grade Fixed Soul Guidance Cannon Shells opened the offensive, including three detonated across the Ming Dou Mountain Range; the resulting collapse of the mountain defenses marked the war's first major strike 854 855.
Its forces used high-altitude detection networks and Soul Engineer Legions to deny reconnaissance, initially feigning pressure against Star Luo while preparing a major thrust into the Heaven Dou Empire 858 861. Under Marshal Ju Zi, the empire breached Heavenly Soul's border defenses, occupied most of its territory, and eventually forced the fall of Heaven Dou City 864 974 1036.
Expansion overextended the empire. Captured Heavenly Soul territories became difficult to administer after local records, resources, and systems were destroyed; supply shortages and civilian noncooperation slowed the occupation 877. The empire later faced setbacks at the Ming Dou Mountain Range, in the Far North Land, and during its two-front campaigns against Star Luo and Dou Ling 1069 1070 1076.
Internal Collapse and Dissolution
The empire's relationship with the Holy Spirit Cult deteriorated as the cult's influence grew, while the Evil Emperor's attack on Ming Capital trapped Long Xiaoyao and Ye Xishui in defense of the capital 1070. Ju Zi subsequently overthrew Xu Tianran with the aid of Long Xiaoyao, Ye Xishui, and Kong Deming; Xu Tianran abdicated through a self-criticism edict, leaving Ju Zi and the Crown Prince to rule 1143.
After the Soul Engineer Regiments were largely destroyed, the Holy Spirit Cult became increasingly dominant. Evil Soul Masters openly operated in Ming Capital, an Undead Military Parade was announced, and the Inner City and Imperial City were sealed behind new walls 1271 1274.
Xu Tianran was later executed for starting the war. Rather than restoring the empire under a new emperor, Soul Hall reorganized its former territory into the Douluo Federation's Sun Moon District 1283.
Soul Tool Technology
Industrial Foundation
- The empire possessed plentiful Rare Metal resources, lowering the cost of Soul Tool materials 163 682.
- Its large Soul Engineer population reduced manufacturing labor costs and supported mass production 163.
- Rare Metal exports were later tightly restricted to impede the Three Empires' soul tool development before conquest 773.
- Controlled materials included Golden Crystal Stone, whose mining, manufacture, transport, and sale were regulated across the entire supply chain 657.
- It developed pharmaceuticals capable of rapidly producing large numbers of low-level Soul Masters for military service 1036.
Advanced Research
- Sun Moon researchers had accumulated numerous specialized optimization paths for Soul Tool arrays, structures, and Rare Metal selection over ten thousand years 163.
- The empire pioneered individual Flying Soul Tools; Star Luo and Heavenly Soul exhausted major national resources replicating captured examples 177.
- Its technology included mineral-powered Soul Tools, Soul Guidance optical screens, advanced flying tools, spatial defense research, and sophisticated precision manufacturing 338 339 430.
- Kong Deming's research eventually achieved light-energy storage: sunlight could be absorbed, stored, and converted into Soul Power for High-Energy Compression Array Soul Tools, though the early equipment was inefficient and cumbersome 1245.
- Super High-Altitude Detection Soul Tools were difficult for foreign powers to study because their cores self-destructed when dismantled 999.
Notable Soul Tools
- Flying Soul Tools — Individual aerial mobility tools generally usable only by Soul Masters above Four Rings because of their high cost 177.
- High-Altitude Detection Soul Tools — Formed extensive surveillance networks that detected infiltrators and directed long-range barrages 758 858.
- Soul Guidance Rays and Cannons — Rays provided penetrating precision fire, while cannons delivered broad-area destructive bombardment 859.
- Sealed Milk Bottles — Allowed low-level Soul Engineers to sustain mid-level Soul Tool firepower; large reserves gave defensive positions exceptional endurance 759 859.
- Ninth Grade Fixed Soul Guidance Cannon Shells — Strategic weapons capable of inflicting immense casualties across a wide area in a single explosion 855 858.
- Linked Soul Tools — Equipped new three-hundred-person legions with coordinated firepower sufficient to contend with much larger Soul Master formations 1036.
- Sun Moon Divine Light Soul Tools — Used to monitor and target Dai Hao during an assassination attempt 759.
- Sun Moon Silver Light Shield — Kong Deming's defensive Soul Tool, used alongside the empire's elite forces against Huo Yuhao 1253.
Military
Soul Engineer Forces
| Unit | Known details |
|---|---|
| Sun Moon Royal Soul Engineer Troupe | A thousand-member royal trump card. All members are Level Five Soul Tool Masters or above, equipped with top-grade Soul Tools; it answers directly to the emperor and is commanded by a Rank Nine Soul Tool Master 635. |
| Guardian Hand | Five elite Soul Engineer Troupes. The Royal Troupe guarded Ming Capital, while the other four were Beast King-level units capable of serving as the spearheads of major offensives 806 879. |
| Evil Monarch Soul Engineer Troupe | A major Soul Engineer unit commanded by Wang Yihang until his death; it was used in border defense and the attack on Dou Ling 864 992 1068. |
| Beast King Soul Tool Legions | Two five-hundred-man formations transferred from Ming Capital during political instability and used to guard Rising Sun City 792. |
| New Soul Engineer Legions | New three-hundred-man units equipped with Level Four and Linked Soul Tools, composed of Soul Masters above Three Rings 1036. |
Strategic Doctrine
- Used aerial mobility, detection coverage, fixed defensive positions, and sustained artillery to overwhelm conventional armies 855 859.
- Built border Soul Tool Positions over more than a thousand years; Star Luo and Heavenly Soul considered direct assaults on these fortifications prohibitively costly 772.
- Relied on deception during the opening of the continental war, pinning Star Luo's forces at the Ming Dou Mountain Range while preparing to invade Heavenly Soul 858 863 864.
- Employed decapitation strikes against imperial capitals, including the assault on Lingdou City by the Evil Monarch and Imperial Dragon Soul Engineer Troupes 1068.
- Could capture poorly defended cities extremely quickly, but required prolonged occupation and administrative reconstruction when seeking rule rather than simple destruction 983 877.
Government and Society
- Ming Capital was the empire's political and economic center and was described as vastly larger than Shrek students expected 430.
- The imperial hierarchy included an emperor, crown prince, court ministers, nobles, military commanders, and powerful Soul Tool Master institutions 635 636.
- The Sun Moon Royal Soul Tool Master Academy was a core educational institution with competitive admissions and former students active in major factions 430 636.
- During Xu Tianran's reign, social classes anticipated war as a means to gain military merit, noble titles, and a redistribution of benefits 627.
- The empire held tournament participants from smaller sects as hostages in Rising Sun City, using them to pressure those sects into advocating peace rather than opposing the empire 792.
- Its aggressive expansion and forced conscription brought severe civilian suffering both within the empire and across the invaded territories 1250.
Relationships
- Shrek Academy — Long-standing strategic rival; Shrek united the Three Empires against the Sun Moon War and remained the largest obstacle to Sun Moon unification 25 446 982.
- Star Luo Empire — Primary western rival; fought the empire across the Ming Dou Mountain Range and resisted its reconnaissance and border offensives 855 858 1076.
- Heaven Dou Empire — Invaded and largely conquered during the continental war; its occupation burden contributed to the Sun Moon Empire's slowdown 864 877 1036.
- Dou Ling Empire — Targeted by a rapid decapitation strike that devastated Lingdou City but failed to secure lasting conquest after Shrek intervention 1068 1069.
- Holy Spirit Cult — Xu Tianran's key ally during his rise to power; later became an increasingly destabilizing force whose influence helped precipitate the empire's collapse 635 1070 1271.
- Ju Zi — Imperial marshal, later Empress Dowager; commanded major campaigns, overthrew Xu Tianran, and governed during the empire's final period 864 1143 1250.
- Kong Deming — Tenth Level Soul Tool Master and Hall Master of the Worship Hall; defended the empire with elite Soul Engineer forces and advanced Soul Tools 1245 1253.
- Soul Hall — Assumed control after the empire's collapse, abolishing it and establishing the Douluo Federation Sun Moon District 1283.
Trivia
- The empire's capital has two names: Sun Moon City and Ming Capital 430.
- More than one hundred large Soul Guidance Screens surrounded the tournament grounds outside Ming Capital, a technological display unique to the empire at the time 634.
- Foreign observers considered the Sun Moon Empire's Soul Tool technology so advanced that it appeared to come from “another world” compared with the Three Empires' research 163.
