Background / History

Bai Yu transmigrated into the body of Bai Changsheng shortly after its owner died. Homeless and starving, he lived in a mountain shed near Peach Blossom Village and relied on the family suona craft to join funeral processions. His performance of the “Grand Funeral Dirge” immediately restored the village funeral band’s confidence in him. 1

After receiving aid from villagers such as Uncle Dazhuang, Sister-in-law San, and Xiao Yu, Bai Yu resolved to repay their kindness. He improved his hunting, caught a deer with Old Mo, shared the meat with his neighbors, and received Master Meng’s Five Elements Fist manual and educational support. 2 3

Bai Yu spent years farming, hunting, performing funerals, studying medicine, and cultivating. When Master Meng died, Bai Yu personally arranged the funeral and inherited Meng’s Herbal Compendium and a letter of introduction to Yang Lin. 5

After twenty years of preparation, Bai Yu retaliated against the Chen Family for its oppression of Peach Blossom Village. He crippled its martial artists, ruined its ancestral graves, returned stolen land deeds and compensation to villagers, then bid farewell at Master Meng’s grave before leaving the village. 6

He later joined the Jiang City Mortuary, where funerals offered both a livelihood and opportunities to receive rewards through the Burial World Record. Under Daoist Lin Jiu’s guidance, he expanded from a martial artist and musician into a practitioner of Zhu You talismans and Yin-Yang arts. 8 11 24

Appearance

Bai Yu is a refined-looking young man with a slender build and an appearance described as delicate yet dignified. He initially appears in a green robe while carrying a white mourning banner and playing the suona. 1

  • Sword-like eyebrows and starry eyes. 1
  • Jade-like face and scholarly bearing. 1
  • Initially physically weak despite his handsome appearance. 1 2
  • Developed steel-like, jade-lustrous skin after mastering the Iron Shirt Skill. 26
  • Later wears a neat yellow Mortuary clerk’s uniform. 43

Personality

Bai Yu is patient, pragmatic, and intensely cautious. He believes longevity rewards restraint: rather than entering the dangerous immortal world immediately, he chooses to accumulate strength and resources in the mortal realm first. He also intentionally conceals his true cultivation when doing so is safer. 11 27 28

Despite his caution, Bai Yu repays kindness and protects people he considers his own. He shares hunted game with neighbors, aids Little Wang when the Black Wolf Gang demands protection money, leads Mortuary workers to safety during the Sha Qi crisis, and risks his life to save Uncle Jiu. 3 26 36 39

His sense of justice is methodical rather than impulsive. He waited two decades before striking the Chen Family and secretly arranged Second Master Zuo’s death only after Zuo repeatedly preyed on Mortuary workers and local residents. 6 32 33

Bai Yu remains humble after becoming a Mortuary clerk, continuing to personally handle burials rather than distancing himself from his former coworkers. 43

Four Elephants Five Elements Fist

Bai Yu’s foundational martial art began as the Five Elements Fist. He fused it with a Five Spirits Fist fragment to create the Yellow Rank, Middle Grade Four Elephants Five Elements Fist. 5 19

  • Builds Blood Essence rather than consuming it after the fusion. 20
  • Tempered his body through Flesh Refinement, Muscle Forging, Skin Tempering, and Meridian Opening. 5 20 27
  • Includes combat forms such as White Tiger Pounces, Black Tortoise Guards the North, Azure Dragon Grasps, and other elemental-beast movements. 5 28
  • Lets him break and tear apart the limbs of a Baleful Corpse through raw physical force. 28

Black Wolf Heart Sutra

A Mysterious Rank internal cultivation method obtained from Zuo Er’s funeral. It converts Blood Essence into Inner Force and supported Bai Yu’s transition into Bone Tempering. 34

  • Works alongside his body-refining practice to temper his bones and viscera. 34 44

  • Originally consists of three direct, lethal saber moves. 10
  • Reached Minor Accomplishment after receiving Saber Technique Experience from Zuo Er’s funeral. 34

Bai Yu acquired the Yellow Rank, Middle Grade Iron Shirt Skill from Qi Yong’s funeral and improved it through Essence Nourishing Powder. 23 26

  • Tempered his entire skin membrane without blind spots. 26
  • Makes ordinary slashes and chops ineffective; a steel saber left only a white mark on his chest. 26
  • Resisted Jueming’s hidden darts and Golden Dragon Abbot’s Corpse Mound Claw. 38 39
  • Does not fully protect his untempered bones from powerful internal impact. 40

Movement and Concealment Arts

Bai Yu employs swift movement and aura concealment to survive opponents stronger than himself. 15 27

  • Flying Swallow Lingxu Step — created by fusing Swallow’s Three Water Skims with Lingxu Step; grants light, evasive movement. 26
  • Used the Lingxu Step to evade the Baleful Corpse and escape Golden Dragon Abbot. 28 40
  • Mystic Tortoise Breath Concealment Art — suppresses his aura and disguises his cultivation level. 15 27 43

Suona, Zhu You Arts, and Talismans

Bai Yu’s funeral music has a soul-soothing and soul-suppressing effect. Daoist Lin Jiu considers his talent for the suona exceptional. 8 15 23

  • Used his Baleful-Qi-dispelling suona to halt a powerful surge of Sha Qi. 22
  • Learned the Soul-Soothing Song from the Zhu You Yin Fu Jing. 26
  • Rapidly learned Evil-Resolving, Evil-Suppressing, and Bone-Dissolving Talismans under Uncle Jiu. 24

  • Uses Corpse Control Talismans to suppress Baleful Corpses. 28 40 41
